Guinness Stout Drinkers
My office colleague brought this thing into the office today for me to identify. It came out of his Guinness Stout bottled beer this past weekend. as the BAP boys can attest i am not a fan of the heavy beers, so i have not clue what this is?? I figure its some deal that will help you pour the beer in a fashion to create the exact type of head you want when poured into a glass from the bottle.
any help here? he is pissed, it cost him an once of cold beer in each unit this past weekend. since his wife only lets him have a couple he feels like he was shorted... ![]() ![]() T$

It's the 'thing' that contains the nitrogen, to give the almost as good as the tap taste.

from the can? this contains the gas to add back into your beer so it tastes fresher. It is not taking up precious space but rather giving precisous flavour!!!

It's the rocket. widget...
http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-001458.php http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,49020,00.html In the late 1980s Guinness pioneered the original spherical widget that is used in cans. A ball combining nitrogen and carbon dioxide is pressurized in the can. When the can is opened, the gas is released. Once the Guinness is poured, it assumes its characteristic half-inch head. For the bottled version of the product, the widget is shaped like a rocket to keep it oriented correctly. The gas is released from the bottom of the widget. The majority of the gas is released when the bottle is first opened, then smaller amounts give the head a boost every time the bottle is tilted. The theory is that a head remains on the beer, inside the bottle, right down to the last sip. |

The official Guiness term is WIDGET. From the website:
"Chill your GUINNESS® Draught can down to about 3.5°C (38.3°F) for at least 3 hours. Steady your hand and take a deep breath. Open, automatically activating the widget, and carefully pour the whole can into a tilted glass in one smooth action, straightening the glass as it fills." Brilliant! |

Cost for the perfect pint:
"The company spent several years and $13.5 million developing the new rocket..." The person that drinks my last Guinness out of the fridge...gets a rocket widget up their nose... ') ( the official Toast Master at my favorite pub back in '99 and I have the t-shirt to prove it ![]() |

You should not try to drink out of the bottle, pour into the glass as stated by others in this thread.
It's just good enough to remind to to visit the old pub and see if the old crew is still around.

Before getting mad at not getting the proper amount, has he ever measured the liquid? Match it to the line on the proper "Guinness" glass and bet its up to where it should be.
We were stuck at a pub where a factory rep was training everyone recently. Took a lot of "training" beers before everything was pronounced "OK" ... course the training beers were free! ![]()
