Modern Marvels

Dear All,

We had an opportunity to assist a producer in making a movie about horsepower. The movie was made on board the Container vessel Cosco Long Beach, equipped with a 12 RTA96C engine.

The first part of the show is about speed boats with high powered engines, the second part is about a high powered commercial ship, although not quite as fast but of a huge size.

The producer informed us as follows:

Our Modern Marvels: Horsepower show is finished and is scheduled to air June 21st at 10 PM EST/9 PM Central on The History Channel. It's always best to check your local listings just to make sure.

Enjoy the show, you should be seeing the worlds most powerful engine, a Wärtsilä two stroke engine producing almost 94'000 horsepower.

I grew up in Long Beach and would take field trips in school to the LB Naval Shipyard and see many interesting things. We were on one naval destroyer that was being restored but I can't remember the name of it. Talk about a restoration..wow...everything was in pieces and still a working crew on board.

Thanks for the heads up on the show Juan. I'll be sure to watch it.

It is a great show, I concur. However, a recent episode was about the Egyptian pyramids... now, they're marvelous, but "ancient", rather than "modern" is the word that leaps to mind when I think of those pyramids...

I'll set up the TiVo tonight!

I would imagine you car is about the size of a piston. I bet your '44 could get shoehorned into the combustion chamber! Those things are enormous.

That one is awesome. I like those Unimogs that go and clean the roadmarkers. The ADAC makes AAA look weak by comparison. Even has a lengthy segement with Alois Ruf in it.

The Hoover Dam one still boggles my mind.

I also love the show and will watch it. Here is a preview from their website on the show:

Horsepower.
Airs on Wednesday, June 21 at 10:00pm ET

Buckle up for a rip-roaring ride through the world of extreme horsepower. Experience the fastest accelerating cars on earth. Find out how horsepower was first coined as a marketing tool for the steam engine in the early 1800s and meet the horsepower police--the Society of Automotive Engineers who test today's most powerful car engines. Feel the amazing power of Unlimited Hydroplane racing as 3-ton boat-beasts careen across water at speeds of over 200 miles per hour. Journey to the bowels of an enormous container ship where the world's most powerful diesel engine provides over 100,000 horsepower. At the Hoover Dam, watch as it harnesses the enormous power of water. Explore the 80,000 horsepower pumping units at the Edmonston Pumping Plant that delivers 2-billion gallons of water a day to thirsty Californians. And sit behind the steering wheel of a new generation of hybrid cars that boast 400-horsepower yet get 42 miles per gallon of gas. TVPG

Some of their shows do crack me up it that I don't know how they can fill an hour with the material. Some of the older and upcoming shows: "Leather", "Shovels", "Bullets", "Breweries". Stuff that I don't mind, but would instantly send my wife into REM sleep.

Juan that's great news. But I must confess I'm a little disappointed that the "Modern Marvels" episode won't be featuring your awesome turbocharged 911!
