I drove my motorcycle for a good 40-mile trip today. Probably burned about a gallon in the process. It was a nice day for a ride.

Very nice article in the Sunday "Parade" insert. It maps changes from thousands of years ago and their effects on the societies of their times. Not as much about what people are doing (although it is said that various organizations say there is an effect), but what changes in weather, crop viability, pest infestation, etc. The most telling is the financial effects, seen most plainly in home insurance providers such as State Farm which is increasing rates in Florida 70% for houses and 95% for mobile homes. Heck, even here in AZ we are taking a hit on home insurance to help cover for other stricken areas!! When it hits the pocketbook, folks will start to pay more attention.

Drivers in Nebraska will soon see another 1 cent fuel-tax increase -- a reminder that conserving gas doesn't always pay off.
The one-cent-per-gallon increase starts July 1. That will increase Nebraska's gas tax to just over 27 cents a gallon. That's the seventh highest gas tax in the nation. But as of Friday morning, Nebraska's overall price a gallon -- at $2.77 for regular unleaded -- is still below the national average of $2.84 a gallon.

Officials said the tax increase is caused partially by people using less gas. As drivers conserve gas by scaling down vacations and getting rid of gas-guzzling cars, the state's revenue from fuel use diminishes.
kindof a kick in the nuts. we're told to conserve to save money, save the planet, etc., and end up getting taxed more for it.

Yep, that comes from the theory that governments have called "it's our money" and if you pay less of it somehow, they'll raise their "fee" to get more of "their" money. A concept that would have literally gotten the tax collector hung 200 years ago is simply borne today.

It is a form of slavery.

What are you whining about?
I would have moved back to North Carolina, or at least seriously considered it, if not for that, the tightening emmissions controls, and several other programs that put North Carolina way ahead of South Carolina on the sociofascism curve.
