Hussein on hunger strike

Saddam ends hunger strike after missing lunch

Ex-Iraqi leader refuses one meal to protest his lawyer's slaying by gunmen

Updated: 5:23 a.m. CT June 23, 2006
BAGHDAD - Saddam Hussein ended a brief hunger strike after missing just one meal in his U.S.-run prison, a U.S. military spokesman said on Friday.

The former Iraqi leader had refused lunch on Thursday in protest at the killing of one of his lawyers by gunmen, but the spokesman said he ate his evening meal.

Don't go crazy or anything Saddam...of course maybe it was his favorite lunch....

Hey, I missed breakfast this morning, can I be on hunger strike too?

Let him starve. This way it will be all over with in a couple of weeks. Problem is that it would not be painful enough but at least we would be rid of the baastard.

He won't starve himself, he hasn't got the huevos to do it. He is a typical bully type. He is counting on his rescue by his captors.

Hussein ran Iraq, and knew the issues there. Christians flourished, you could buy a beer in Baghdad. Street crime was nearly nonexistent, just like the neo-cons want here.

No longer. The whole country is a mess, murder is rife, street criminals rule every neighborhood.

The best thing for Iraq would be to restore the lawful government there.

Hey Paste, maybe you should start a hunger strike to protest the illegal and immoral war in Iraq...

It's an area of the world that responds more to force than law/civility unfortunately. In order to unify an area like Iraq, you need a strong leader and/or government. This does not necessarily mean "brutal", but I can certainly see why it was effective. The puppet government in place now is ridiculous. Aside from being overly complicated to the point most of the people can't even comprehend it, they're likely to neither respect nor trust it. Add to it the fact that people have lived in fear of government for years and it's not exactly a "slam dunk" overnight kind of solution. It's going to take years to be even marginally effective - generations to really work.

There needs to be a Kurdistan, but in order to do that you'd have to hold a gun to the collective heads of both Turkey and Iran each of whom have about one third of old Kurdistan; which won't work. Blame that on the British who divvied up the land of the Kurds and gave it away long ago.

If you can think of a solution to the US government created chaos and bloodshed in Iraq, be my guest.

The British gave it away huh? I am sure a few million Kurds would disagree. There needs to be a Kurdistan indeed, see this as Part I.

As for a solution to the present problems in Iraq - "restoring the local government there" aint gonna work. Who really wants the baathist party back? The secessionist genie is out of the bottle.

Then that's all the more reason to leave and let those that live there settle the issue.

The Brits did, indeed, have a lot to do with the unrest in the ME, even though their partition was accomplished decades ago. More than one ME historian says that no consideration was given to divvying the area up by ethnicity. Hence the mess where countries have internal areas where (a) hates (b) who live in the next "county".

What is more interesting is the bloodthirsty way that people who believe in the same basic religion can rationalize killing others of the same religion who believe a subtly different way....Oops...Sorry....forgot about Christianity.

I do not think anyone should be left to starve. I just shipped the poor man a BLT.......
