Thinking of a 50cc scooter to screw around with -

				Does it require separate insurance?

I would think so, though it shouldn't be expensive.

I've been having the same idea...let me know if you find any for cheap.

Depending on your state, 50 cc (or is it < 50 cc?) scooters might not even qualify as motor vehicles that you need to register for the road. Meaning, the DMV has no jurisdiction over them. But again, I think that varies state-by-state. I've definitely seen people running Vespa's (and the like) plateless---and it's legal. Hence, insurance coverage necessity may also vary.

Ours here in WA State requires a drivers' license and a license plate - but no motorcycle endorsement -

I bought a Stinger scooter a couple years ago. Added a pipe, K&N style air filter, gets up to about 30-35mph. Got a couple buddies to get scooters as well, and while it was initially fun, the novelty wore off pretty quick. It just collects dust these days.

Most scooters under 50cc are exempt from any licence, insurance , helmet requirements. The trick is to buy one the higher end units and then install the big stroke/bore kit.

Had a friend do this when he lost his driver's licence. Fortunately his work was just a few miles and inside town limits. He bought an Aprilia and then installed their "big'motor kit. It now is 85cc with a tuned pipe and will comfortably do the speed limit. Cool! The only thing is he has almost $6K in it!!

Sorry, I know the 'Prillers and Vespa's ooze style that chicks love, but if I'm gonna drop several thousand dollars on two-wheeled transportation, it's gotta be a real motorcycle. (The exception being Aprilia's scooter with race replica graphics or the Ben Bostrom graphics, that you can use as a pit bike.) Does Yamaha still make their Vino? Vespa-like looks, but for about $1600, and with Japanese reliability.
