Blue Laws Suck!

With all my running around yesterday it seems I passed a deadline I did not know existed.

I wanted to pick up a couple of jugs of this Whisky Beer. Not too sure about what is in this stuff but it has 20% alcohol and tastes pretty smooth.

The problem is its served from a tap. They are trying to figure out how to bottle it but it goes flat after a week. From what I have been told.

So they sell this stuff by the bottle, actually, a large moonshine looking jug. It will keep for a week, like it would last that long in my house anyway.

So After all my running around I mention to my brother, who I am visiting in Lexington, that I want to pick up a couple of bottles before we turn in for the evening. Its 10:00 on a Saturday night.

He then tells me they cannot sell it after 8:00 at night. So I say fine, we will just head over and get some on Sunday afternoon before I head out. Thinking if the laws are like Florida you cannot buy booze until after 12 noon.

Nope, no alcohol sales on Sunday, period. Well except for restruants.

For what ever reason they cannot sell this stuff after 8 PM on a normal night and I am unsure why. I gues becasue it it dispensed for the sale.

I was having some friends over for a F-1 race once and went to the grocery store to pick up some beer and forgot you cannot buy until after 12 noon on Sunday.

Does anyone else think these Blue Laws are a joke?

I cannot understand what they are supposed to accomplish. All it does it force you to plan ahead for your Sunday morning drinking.

Stupid frigging laws in parts of our country. Grew up in a state that had blue laws. Lived overseas for a long time then moved back to Dallas and ran into them there as well. Could not believe going to a Sams Club or Costco in Dallas and them not selling any booze to keep the locals happy.

The locals will continue to vote for these blue laws as long as they can stagger to the polls IMHO...

Yeah, it used to be *really* bad around here. You couldn't buy alcohol at all on Sundays until just a couple of years ago. None. Didn't matter if it was after noon or not.

The religious right would say, "well, just buy your evil alcohol on Saturday". Why should they care *when* I buy a six pack of beer? Just another example of people attempting to push their religious beliefs onto all members of society. If *they* don't want to buy alcohol on Sundays, that's fine, but don't tell me when I can and can't buy it. After all, Sunday is just another day to me...

Mike,

There are even church's in the Dallas area who have a symbol on their sigh outside. Its a wine glass with a red X through it, signifing that if you drink you are not welcome there.

Far too many people forget that Jesus enjoyed a wine from time to time...

Here in MA, the explanation is more financially driven. (Maybe the origins of the law were religious, but who cares anymore?) Package stores (or packies, as they're called) are/were frequently mom 'n pop type shops. So to allow mom 'n pop a day off per week, they made it illegal for anyone (including larger chain stores) from selling alcohol on Sundays. A leveling of the playing/selling field. At least, that's what proponents of blue laws claim. However, they've recently (within the last couple years IIRC) dropped blue laws, so that alcohol can be sold on all 7 days of the week. (Screw mom n' pop?) They did forget to strike the bit about no alcohol sales on the Monday following a Sunday holiday, though. A little short-sighted, our legislature. Whoops.

The jug they sell the beer in is called a 'growler'.

Here in St. Louis, you can't buy package liquor from 1:30 am - 9am. But lots of bars are open until 3am. But we do have the option of crossing the river into Illinois where they never stop selling.

NY is slowly changing. Still can't buy between 12 am -12 pm on Sunday.

Liquor stores can now open on Sunday as long as they close one other day during the week.

You can now buy wine in supermarkets. Used to be just beer.

The laws are stupid.

I plan on getting some water today, a Sunday...but only between the hours of 12pm and 5pm...and only at certain "test" locations.

From what I've been told the "test" is going quite well, surpassing even Saturday's sales on a regular basis...
