Ya, This is work...My Awesome Vacation to the Canadian Rockies.

Flew into Edmonton Monday, drove to Jasper seeing several Coal Mines along the way and drove back to Edmonton Thursday. This is not work. The Canadian Rockies are amazing - just flithy with animals. Here is a shot of a covered wagon and the peaks in the background.

and a pic of an Elk. The rack is still fuzzy. Must be young?

and ya, I did do some work. Capped 4 mines, should save then each over $1MM in fuel economy per year. These are monsters - and to think the transmission is a bundle of wires! Yep, the diesel engines generate electricy to power electric motors. Pretty cool...

Nice truck

The Rocky Mountains pretty much kick ass, top to bottom. I particularly like Glacier/Waterton, the international park. Some of the prettiest spots in the world, watched a buddy get married on a boat at Glacier Park one time. It was quite a scene.

Plane trip there and back was the first and last time I ever used a travel agent, total nightmare getting there and back, but a good trip.

The Deer were all over the place as were the Coyotes. We all see plenty of those, but these rascles are another story...

I pulled the truck over and just stared at this scene for the longest time. The smell of the air is unlike anything else. If you ever want to take a vacation, you should consider the Canadian Rockies.

And as I'm looking out, I could hear in the background my radio playing:

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
Had to listen had no choice
I did not believe the information
(I) just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom boom boom
"Son," he said "Grab your things,
I've come to take you home."

Nice pics! Man, you've seen more of this country than most Canadians! And you sell it well too.

Mike,

When are you going to stop playing around with those toy trucks and get a real one?

Bring back caribu steaks and cigars!

That brings back good memories, see if you can get to Mt Robson and also to the Athabasca toe of the North American glacier. Spactaculer stuff. Cold too even in the hottest part of the summer.

Mike,
The elk is not young but pretty mature. Annually, all deer grow new antlers. The one in the picture is in velvet. Velvet is a tissue that covers the developing antlers and supply the growth with blood. In a few weeks the velvet will split and this bull will begin rubbing his antlers against trees and shrubs to remove the velvet. Then his antlers will look like a normal rack. Wildlife biology lesson over.

Nice photos of a beautiful place. The Stone Sheep, moose, etc. are everywhere, aren't they?

That looks magnificent. All you need is a fly rod. I've never seen big horn sheep up close like that before. Great stuff!

I have flown into Vancouver twice and just the view from my window was enough to take my breath away. The first time I flew in a storm was lifting and the sun was setting. We were flying into the setting sun and I sat riveted to my seat for the last hour or so of the flight because it was the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen. I will get up to see the real thing someday.

By the way, if you do bring back any cigars, do not talk to anyone in the airport. The second time I flew out of Vancouver I cleared customs and went over to wait for my flight. A nice young guy about my age, dressed in a blue blazer came over and started to talk to me. Seemed ordinary enough, if a little overly friendly at first. Except all he wanted to talk about was whether I brought any thing through customs - specifically cigars. Which is odd because bringing cigars through customs would be illegal . . .

And all of a sudden a light went on in my head and my new friend's buz hair cut, ramrod posture and blue blazer registered with me and I politely excused myself from the nice customs agent who was trying to get me to incriminate myself and sat somewhere else.

As a matter of fact, I had not bought any cigars. The whole thing made me half angry, half amused.

Real mountains are addictive, aren't they? I know that "fresh air smell" you're talking about -- I was raised in the Idaho Rockies. There's nothing like watching the sun rise over the mountains, slowly cutting through the morning fog.

Ed, the 77 would have to see major reliability work prior to any Canadian adventure. She runs good enough now but between the high alt and the gravel roads from time to time would spell issues for a sleepy ROW.

Actually, you can thank the coal mines for that feature. As they finish out a site, they remediate the soil and plant grass. The Big Horn are protected on mine sites and the eating is good. They quickly learn that all is OK and grow comfy. I think I could have petted one but when I saw how fast they were images of how the rams work out territory issues made me think twice. I was so close I could smell them. They smell like goats!

I did the TAUCK tour group for the C Rockys w/the bride 2yrs ago. I've done TAUCK before so I had confidence in the routine before hand.

Great routine at the best hotels in Baniff etc etc. It was about $275/ea/day without airfare. It's a class act.

Doing it in a tent on my first visit is another story.
