MP3s from CD Software

What program do you guys use to convert your CDs to MP3s? I'd prefer Freeware or Shareware cause I know they are out there. I have some CDs in my car changer that I want to put on my MP3 player so I can listen to them in the other car without moving CDs around all the time. Any ideas?

CDEX. It's free. Uses CDDB to download track titles... just set some stuff in the options... bitrate and where to save the files... and BAM. It's easy to use.

Thanks! I downloaded it and got one CD converted to .wav files and compressed it. But how do I get it to a MP3 now?

There's several buttons on the righthand side... one rips to .wav... one rips to compressed audio... THAT is the one that will do it directly to MP3

I think that you can also use RealPlayer to go directly from CDs to MP3s.

First off, I'm a Mac user. You can open a CD with Widows Media Player and use the save as button under the file tabe to save as mp3. when you save it save it above 140dB.

Thanks again Matt! I had to change a setting under options but after that it works GREAT!!! Now I'm in business! http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

I didn't try Realplayer so I don't know if that works or not. I used to use the old version of Winamp to make .wav files then I had to compress them and lastly convert them to .mp3s. What a hassle! This program Matt told me about is pretty slick!

Unless I missed something, I couldn't get it to do it. But I'm not the best at this sort of thing.........

I found CDEX several years ago... used it ever since. It works great, so why use anything else? Glad it's workin out for you!

masraum 07-11-2006 05:55 PM

You can also use Winamp.

I downloaded the newest version of Winamp and I couldn't figure it out. THEN I posted this thread. The version of Winamp that looked like it did it was $20 bucks. The old version I had on my old computer would convert it to .wav..... Well see my earlier post. But if the newest FREE version of Winamp will do it please share how....

Matt - I'm on my second CD and it's working great! It's really easy and I wish I was using it years ago! Thanks a lot I really appreciate your suggestion & help!!

"Exact Audio Copy". Just set it up and then start cycling through your CD collection. It starts the conversion when you put in CD.

what about iTunes? It is free and rips CDs to mp3 or aac formats. Or am I missing something that you want to do?

Please forgive me if I sound like an a$$, I'm not trying to.
step-by-step-by-memory.
This should get you close to using Windows Meda Player.

1.Place CD in drive, open up Window Media Player, and highlight the song/songs you want to convert.

2. Click on file, then save as. A new window will pop-up.

3. At the bottom of the new window is a box "save as type"

4. In this box, click mp3 and then click save.

I hope this helps with Winders. But my best advice is get a MacBook!!!

Nah you're fine. My windows media player only has the options of 'now playing, library, rip, burn, sync, and guide' to choose from. There is no file save as. I know what you are talking about though cause my last computer had that. If there is something I'm missing please let me know. But I think I'm stuck on that CDex program Matt told me about now....

nostatic 07-11-2006 07:24 PM

rip is "save as". It converts red book format to mp3.

Why not use iTunes? I works fine on windoze.

wcc 07-12-2006 02:45 AM

I'll check out that iTunes for a comparison, but this CDex is pretty simple......

Hetmann 07-12-2006 04:56 AM

I use Musicmatch Jukebox. Free and works great.
