Would you go to a ghey bar?

Things seem slow on the board so let's what I can stir up.

One of the lady friends I occasionally date has a long time male gay friend and when he is in town they get together. So we are talking on the phone and she says something like "Ray is in town and we are going out. He's a great guy and I would really like you to meet him but we are probably going to a gay bar and you probably wouldn't want to do that". I was a little taken aback, I consider myself a modern, sophisticated, fellow and I'm certainly not a homophobe.

Now before you guys go all brokeback mountain on me...

A. A gay bar is not my idea of a place to hang out.
B. I have never been in a gay bar.
C. I would be with a lady friend.
D. I hear that hetero women like to hang out in gay bars, I presume so they won't be bothered by guys hitting on them.
E. The gay guys I have and do work with seem to know who the "breeders" are leave us alone.

AFJuvat 07-15-2006 08:10 AM

It is one evening out of your life, and you are going with a lady.

Go.

Joeaksa 07-15-2006 08:13 AM

Agreed with AFJ.

My ex-wife had two gay friends. They did her hair and were very nice guys. We went out with them a couple of times and had a great time. The bar was busy and all the guys danced with my wife until she could not stand, so she had fun. The guys knew I liked ladies so did not hit on me so it was fine.

Try it... just do not make a habit of it! :)

cool_chick 07-15-2006 08:22 AM

Ditto. Good times, good people.

Wrecked944 07-15-2006 08:37 AM

I've been to a zillion gay bars. And unless you are going to a bar specifically to "score", all bars are basically the same...people stand around and drink and talk...unless it is a "piano bar". Then they sing show tunes. ;)

masraum 07-15-2006 08:57 AM

I've been to one, once long ago. It was supposed to be a really hoppin' bar, and it was "straight night". I'm not a homophobe. My buddies didn't tell me until we were almost there. The line was huge, there were plenty of straight people, but they were still the minority. It was, at the time, the coolest bar in Ybor City (part of Tampa FL). My roommate couldn't handle it, so we didn't stay long. For us, at the time, it just didn't make sense, we were in our early 20's and pretty much always looking for girls.

vash 07-15-2006 09:07 AM

i go all the time....well, not all the time, but alot. not fair since i live in san fran and you cant shake a stick, and not hit a gay bar. it is just a bar. i have more issues going into a jazz club..yuck, jazz! not a fan of jazz. i am not a homophobe or so egotistical that i think everyone wants to bang me...

RANDY P 07-15-2006 09:22 AM

BTDT a few times with girlfriend in tow, usually way after hours- and it's never my suggestion.

There are a lot of hot chicks that hang out in those places..

Porsche-O-Phile 07-15-2006 09:22 AM

No particular interest in going. The entire gay scene doesn't hold much appeal to me.

Of course I have neighbors that are gay but they're also very rude, self-righteous, snobbish and inconsiderate. Add to that the manner that they carry themselves (kind of a pompous sassy swagger) and it doesn't do much to make me sympathetic to their cause.

I've known a couple of other gay folks in the past and generally they're okay (this current batch isn't typical I don't think). I'm usually pretty much "live and let live" - their life, their choice - doesn't matter to me. But I'm not really in a hurry to embrace their lifestyle or financially support it either.

Drago 07-15-2006 09:28 AM

The ReBar here in Seattle used to be known as a gay bar. I've been there a few times when I was younger and never noticed any "gay" activity. There were occasionally girls dancing with other girls but you get that pretty much at any bar where there is dancing.

Of course you must keep in mind that this was during the period I refer to as the lost years...;)

eeh, the ReBar - the nicer you dress, the more the cover charge is...You have dudes that make Marilyn Mansion look like a supermodel in there..

The doorman asked me if I had a Visa last time we attended...(probably 7 years ago).

the place is a dump.. ;)

Correct but the problem is that they do not like guys, so it is not a "target rich environment" for us straight guys!

Gay is a disease and its f'ing gross how much attention they get. These days everybody is trying to cater to them and some of them have some serious attitude. Everytime I see Ellen and Rosie(the hog) on TV I wanna puke. I just saw a gay chick at the auto parts store this morning ...She looked like a damn lumber jack....she was NASTY.

The last place I wanna be is in a bar full of them.... So No I would not go

As well as the girls do not get hit upon by the guys there. Our flight attendents go out partying with the gay guys on the planes because they can have fun and do not need to worry about fending off the guys.

HardDrive 07-15-2006 09:44 AM

I used to DJ in the gay clubs. I never had any problems. rjp is right, there are some VERY hot chick in the gay bars, and they are NOT gay for the most part.

Ditto how I got there- then we used to make it a stop on the Saturday tour every now and then...

13 Coins afterwards to fend off the buzz...

Nowadays I just play sick and go home @ midnight...

Hey, why aren't you at JW's Swap?

Um, I was out at weird bars till 4AM ....I'd do the swap meet but got an offer to go to a big BBQ / party in BC and I'm jamming at noon - this should be interesting...

Ooh, and the Dick's deluxe...Many nights I remember eating a few of those, but I DEFINITELY have to be tanked to eat those.

***Explanation to the Californians: Dicks Deluxe is a 1/4LB double stack cheeseburger cooked on a grill with lots of thousand island dressing, shredded lettuce, and wrapped in copper foil. When you get it and unwrap it, it looks kind of like it was sat on, and with all things that taste good, it's greasy. It works wonders by curing hangovers when you're drinking, and works even greater wonders by causing hangovers when you eat 'em sober - always a good idea until you finish one, or in my case - 4. But they are damn good..****

Dicks is one of the few choices at 1:30AM when you're stumbling out of the bar / club / jazz dive and fiending food. :)

Went once and it was more or less as described above. Got to watch two lipstick lesbians make out, that alone was worth the price of admission.

Drago 07-15-2006 10:18 AM

Well, I'm heading out from work to meet the swappers for lunch at the 74th St. Ale House....they've got a corned beef sandwich with my name on it!

dd74 07-15-2006 10:36 AM

Joeaksa 07-15-2006 10:43 AM

You are not wearing a condom while reading this? Better use extra soap! :)

Jeez, just noticed that I went over 10,000 posts on this thread... need to get a life and get out in the garage instead of typing here!

I went a few times many years ago with a hot blond girl I was dating. She had a friend there. First time was kind of strange. I was under age (20) but they didn't seem to mind ;) . Then as we walked past a booth I heard a guy say, "check her out" to which his friend replied, "forget her, check him out"

Her friend was an older guy that kept anyone from messing with me. I never bought a drink, nor did my girlfriend. When I was about to go to the bathroom, my girlfriend's friend told her to take me to the ladies room. Overall not a big deal.

I went to a lesbian bar with my wife and some girl friends a few years ago. I wasn't as comfortable there. I got the feeling I didn't belong :D .

Jims5543 07-15-2006 01:57 PM

Wife and I used to go to downtown West Palm Beach back in the day. There is a street there called Clematis Street. We had a nic name for it....

At about 2 in the morning we would head for this gay bar as the "trendy" clubs would start to die and we were far from done dancing and partying. The club at the time was called Enigma. The it was Chrome. We had so much fun there. The music was so good and the crowd was so freaky it was a show in itself.

We would close that place down at 6 in the morning head to Denny's for breakfast and sleep the next day away next to the pool.

Good times.. We had tons of fun.

deathpunk dan 07-15-2006 03:37 PM

gay bars = generally harmless. though the ones in providence do show some pretty unappealing stuff on the tv's in there.

lesbian bars = generally a horror show.

Most gay guys I know are rather irritating...but I'm not such a caveman mouthbreathing idiot that I think its a 'disease' or some other 'moral failing'.

YMMV.

dean 07-15-2006 04:04 PM

I could see one advantage to being a gay guy. If you partner has a headache, your still getting some. The hugh drawback is that something is dick and not pussy. eww and yikes

I know lots of gay guys and girls. They are just like straight ones. Some are nice and some are *******s.

Edit. I can't believe you can't say ********* on this site. Oh yea we are protecting the children.

Tobra 07-15-2006 04:31 PM

Gay guys know how to party, best Halloween party I ever went to, hosted by a gay guy and attended by about 50% male, homosexual flight attendants. It was a hoot. I went with my wife, and we only knew about 2 people when we got there, but had a ton of fun.

It is not like you are getting set up with the guy or something, or is it? Not that there's anything wrong with that. :D
