New speed limits in west Texas

I saw these speed limit signs last weekend west of Kerrville on I-10

Excellent! Might shave a bit off of a very long drive next time!

That's so needed.

I-10: San Antonio to El Paso is a boring drive. The quicker you can get through it, the better.

Dave: ROAD TRIP. BTW your project seems to be moving about as fast as mine. Old Widebody's been in bodyshop since OCT, and haven't even got to suspension etc. Got my M&B 911R muffler the other day. sure like to put it on.

So does everyone still drive 20 over when the limit's 80? That what everyone does in NorCal - cruises around 80-85 in a 65.

Not in that part of Texas. Speed enforcement can be local in nature. Trooper writes the ticket, but the justice court is local.

Don't ask me how I know.

I wish Illinois would do that. The drive from Bloomington from Chicago is boring as hell.

Problem is, it's a huge revenue-producing corridor too.

I'd drive the speed limit if it was 80 mph...

Most of the interstates in the west half of the country are 75 already w/ a ~5mph "speedo error" alowance and traffic is doing 80.

Fast traffic was going about 85 rather than the normal 9 over. There were quite a few troopers out; they should have been back in the 70 zone were folks were also going 85 (or not since they might have nailed me too).

Call me crazy but it looks to me like the 80 MPH speed zone in that picture is only about 100 feet long before it hits 70 again.

70 is the truck speed limit. Texas hasn't figured out that it's not safe to have vehicles going different speeds. Fortunately most truck drivers do their best to keep to the right lane or they go the car speed limit (plus 9 mph of course).

Just looked closer. Did not notice the big word TRUCK on the sign at first glance.

Who are we kidding, everyone's going 90 on that stretch anyway. The only way I can stay awake is to drive that stretch at night, then at least, you have the sense that you're moving.

I still remember the late 60"s in Texas. Speed, Unlimited. Typical 120 MPH, no hassle. I long for those days again.

One of the DFW news stations found a stretch of road in the metroplex with NO signage. My guess is that this was fixed within hours...

Around here they just give you a ticket for exceeding a "reasonable and prudent" speed in that case.

Technically there are normal "state limits" so signs are not 100% necessary. I've taken defensive driving a few times over the years, and they always make a point of showing a chart

neighborhoods, 30mph unless otherwise posted
business districts 35 unless otherwise posted
... etc... So the rule is supposed to be, if you don't know then go these speedlimits until you see a sign that says otherwise.

When you enter North Carolina - there is a sign that says 55MPH enless otherwise posted.

The one I wonder about - is there are a few signs on a few roads around here that read "end speed zone". No other speed limit for a good stretch. Its "otherwise" posted that there is no speed zone...

I think where I lie in S.C. its 45MPH. N.C. roads tend to be a bit faster.

I hate speed laws - they exist for one purpose and one only - money.

Because it's too difficult to legislate/enforce a "common sense" standard (like parts of Montana have) like "don't drive faster than what is reasonable given driver, vehicle, conditions, and road", they come up with these dumbed-down "catch-alls" just to make revenue off it.

I think most people know it's "unreasonable" to go 50 through a school zone or 120 on a highway unless it's very un-trafficked, straight, flat and you have a car built for it.

But to make that the rule would cost the states billions in B.S. enforcement and the insurance companies that buy the politicians would scream bloody murder since they wouldn't be able to extort more money from the average Joe anymore.

So we're stuck with the bull**** system we have. . . Unlikely to change anytime soon. Unless you go to Montana.
