Current obsession with celebrities. Why??

What is it with the current overwhelming obsession with celebrities and their lives?? Are peoples own lives that pathetic and boring, that they need to know what all these Hollywood actresses, actors and the like are doing every minute of the day. What they do with their kids. Where they eat. Etc., Etc....

Honestly, who the fuch cares??? It's sickening.

Most of us do not. I have worked with them and they are for the most part just like us, but with far too much money.

All these housewives going through the magazines on a daily basis need to get a life and find something productive to do, like posting on Pelican!

....
I think that's why people are so fascinated by them. People also love schadefreude and the "what would I do if I had that much money" dream.

Yes, absolutely.

It's really nothing new, if you think about it. In times past, regular folk were always interested in what the local royalty was up to, scandals, etc. I think a large part of it is living vicariously, when your own life isn't that interesting. (crappy 9-5, frozen TV dinner, watching sitcoms all night, go to bed, rinse, repeat) If your own life *is* interesting, you don't need to look to other people for inspiration.

I don't get it either! It's disgusting, really! I've often told my wife that if (insert any celeb. name here) were across the street handing out free popsicles on a sweltering summer day, that I'd gladly stay inside and avoid them! WHO GIVES A F_CK!

In my opinion...

With the current TV shows being 99% "REALITY SHOW" the celebs have nothing better to do than to get the tabloids to write about them. Seems that every week a new reality show comes on air. Personally, I'm sick of them!

Sad that most folks in the USA tend to rise up to the lowest common denominator. Reality shows are extremely cheap for TV companies to produce - there are no high-paid celebs, and the populace seems to really dig these second rate/border line trash TV shows.

I say get rid of the reality shows, put the celebs back to work, and produce some better TV that we can all enjoy.

I think there are a couple of things going on.

From the celebrity side: A lot of them are not very educated. (It seems there is a direct corelation between lack of education and media coverage. I cite Paris Hilton.) They are surround by sycophants who have them convinced they can do no wrong, they are better than everyone else, etc... They believe they have the right, if not the obligation, to clue in the unwashed masses on their wisdom.

On the consumer side. To me, it's a lot like the Greeks treated their gods. The more you build up celebrities, the more spectacular their eventual implosion.

Hey!!

That could be said about most of our elected officials regardless of party affiliations!!

I thought it was funny anyway, seeing as we are living in a society of personality cults, in sports, entertainment and politics........

I agree it's definately nothing new, but it just seems to be to the extreme now. Take for example someone like Lindsay Lohan, everything she, or a family member, or the 3rd cousin twice removed, sneezes its front page and prime time news.

Last friday I was meeting with one of the actresses from "Friends" who is directing her first short film. I was standing outside waiting for her to show up and the minute she pulls in, the paparazzi show up out of nowhere. Hell of a way to live your life...

Speaking of celebrities, anyone know what happened to Ashley Judd? Apparently she spent some time in a mental hospital. I always liked her (politics notwithstanding). But she does take some disturbing roles - she played the same role in Eye of the Beholder and Twisted - where she skanks around and then kills the man right after nasty sex.

Damn, I just got sucked in! Gossiping about a celebrity...

Really, I don't care about these people. You've got to believe me!!

Speaking of Lindsay Lohan, what's with the freckles? Can't she get that fixed?

What's the matter with me?

How many 24 hour news channels do we have now? How else do you expect to fill up that much otherwise dead air?
