Oh, Clarkson. HOw I loathe thee and adore thee.
He keeps doing this. If you watch TOP GEAR on the BBC, when he road tests, say, the GT3, or the Cayman S, he is in stitches. He raves about the car. Explatives, like "BRILLIANT!" are shouted at full lock. But then it comes time for synopsis, and all of a sudden Clarkson has some stupid, nitpicking reason for not liking the Porsche. He just doesn't like Porsches, period. BTW, the one Porsche he still raves about is the late-80s 944 Turbo.

Clarkson writes brilliantly. I wish Top Gear was back on.

He pretty much sums up my thoughts about Porsches, modern and not. IMO, they do lack passion, but make up for it with dependability, functionality, and purpose. From the outside they are nothing all that exciting, until you dance past every other car on the track with half the horsepower and half the repair costs.
For me Porsches are like the go-karts you rent at the mini-golf center: no frills but perfectly suited for their environment which they dutifully perform day after day. Unless we're talking about the 906 which is one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

The "lacks soul" argument is essentially this:
"I can't find anything wrong with the car, but I still don't like it."

EVO also found it flawed in their latest issue. Unlike Clarkson, the guys at EVO seem to know a thing or two about cars...

The article is good but he feels the car has become dull and boring. In some respects, it has but overall it has not but I am biased, I love Porsche, no matter what they create.

You do realize that the following ad was on page 2 of the article...I'm surprised that Michigan Mat's head didn't blow off...

I thought it was a very good article.
So he's not into the styling or the lack of supercar drama. I don't have a problem with that. Most people seem to like supercars to shout out "look at me!". The 997 TT doesn't do that. He does go to great lengths to describe the car as being simply the best supercar for the road. Period. He acknowledges the car's incredible pace and build quality but simply is not turned on by it. I don't have a problem with that. Not everyone feels the same way as we do about Porsches. |

Here's how I see the "lacks soul" or "lacks passion" argument: some cars have serious built-in personality, for example a Ferrari, or a Lotus Elise, or a Mini Cooper. Some cars are born cold and clinical, such as your silver or black Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Lexus... or that all-too-familiar trackday Swiss Army Knife, the Porsche.
But ANY car will earn personality. This happens as you drive the car. Come on, are you going to sit here and tell me that my 23-year-old 944 doesn't have personality? Are you going to tell me that a well-driven 993 twin turbo doesn't have personality? And although it may have started life as a cold and clinical technological showcase, are you going to tell me that a 1987 959, driven now, doesn't have personality?
