Child Support, Medical Insurance, and Child Care

I do not have any children but I have close friends and family that do and I have always wondered...Why is the father (generally) required to pay not only 20% of his income (after taxes) but also have medical insurace on the kids and pay child care? All the while the "ex" (mother) does not work and lives off of her "ex's" (dad) income. Health insurance alone can run $1,000 a month and childcare is about another $1,000; so if the father is paying $1,000 in child support and $2,000 for health insurance and childcare, then he is really paying out about 50% of his income to his "ex".

It seems that society is trying to "put" the father's out so that they can not survive on their own. I know plenty of men that have to live with their parents because their "ex" is sucking them dry. It is sad especially since some women have figured this out and become pregnant purposely so that they don't have to work for the next 18 years. I always believed that if a women is going to receive child support; she must work an equivalent amount of hours (not to exceed 40 per week) as the father of the child. I don't understand why the mother does not have to have any financially responsibility for her own child.

What do you all think of the child support laws? Are they fair? Are men the victims of a feminist society?

So how much experience do you have in this area? Ever been divorced? Know anyone who has (and isn't bitter or have an axe to grind)? You are throwing around numbers that are likely specific to a particular scenario. They are NOT a general rule of thumb...

The state of Minnesota and Wisconsin is 20% of your income for child #1 and 25% for child #2 and 30% for #3 and so on. That is state law; not my perception. We ALL know that health insurance is not cheap (the cheapest I have found is through an employer is $750 for a parent and child) and child care is NO less than $150 a WEEK for 1 child. So no, my numbers are not a specific case; they are reality.

then your marriage is doomed. Don't do it.

I'm dead serious. If worrying about child support is a factor in getting married or not, you should not do it. And please do not breed.

Can't speak for your state. In California, there is a formula based on incomes of each partner and the custody split. In my case, it was a wash. I elected to pay child support to help my ex stay in the house so were were conveniently located to each other. But I was under no obligation to do so because we have a nearly equal custody agreement and equivalent incomes.

If the wife stops working at the request of the husband to have kids, then a divorce happens, shouldn't the husband pay? I think so. If you don't want the responsibility, either have her keep working or don't have kids.

have you guys done couples counseling? I highly recommend it. It sounds like there are some serious issues to resolve. Just trying to be helpful. I will not get married again without doing couples counseling first...

Get a vasectomy. Consider freezing a couple of batches first if the idea of complete sterility is unsettling to you.

However, I fork over a full 1/4 of my net to child support for just my son.
So you get to keep 75% of your net all to yourself? I bet your smiling all the way to the bank.

if you are worried about this BEFORE you get married.........................YOU ARE MARRYING THE WRONG WOMAN! run like hell from this one! wow that is as bizzarre as it comes. the only thing i was worried about, was showing up on time for the wedding and not being hungover or still drunk from my bach party! never even crossed my mind before i got married. think real hard about this one. i was married for 23 yrs and it was great until she fell into substance abuse, then it was hell! have been divorced for 8 yrs now and it is wonderful. have 2 boys 20 and 17. never had to pay child support/spousal maint...........nothing! joint custody when i could have easily nailed sole custody and child support from her. she managed a agg. DUI with a .254 BAC!!!!! and poss. of drugs during the height of the divorce. white flag went up from her side. ie. unconditional SURRENDER! she was not white trailer trash, daddy was CEO of fortune 100 company. substance abuse still occurs 8 years later. only way i will ever get married again is to live w/woman for (2) years, and then see if we still mesh like peas in a pod!
