Sure you are not sleeping on them? Had a bad case many years ago at summer camp. Was asleep on a bunk bed and my arms hung off the head of the bed. Had a dream my arms had fell off... Woke up and for a moment thought that they really did fall off. Took a few minutes for them to wake up, but they were completely numb when I first woke up. It has happened to a lesser extent from time to time in a regular bed/couch.

Dave

Have you put on any weight? Blood sugar normal? Is one of the signs of the big D. Just one of the signs, could be other things too. I am starting to get arthritic in my hands. Same thing in the morning.

Something else I thought of looking at your location and weather. My hands are more prone to hurt / tingle when the baro changes (before after frontal passage or flying...DUH...).

Do you have AC on at night, and are the hands / arms outside of the covers?

You should seriously consider having your blood sugar checked, could be the beginning stages of diabetes. It is much better to catch it sooner than later.
Best of Luck.

could be a back or neck misalignment. I have alot of faith in my Chiropractor.
My hands did that same thing when I had Carpal Tunnel but that's a whole different issue. They would go numb all the time.

Is it both hands or just one at a time when it occurs?

Laying on your side, on your shoulder can impinge the medial nerve which can cause the numbness, although it would only affect the arm/shoulder you are laying on.

Single hand onset may be an indication of impending carpal tunnel problems. Although I imagine it could occur at the same time in both hands, only I would not think it would be as normal as the single onset.

Good luck,

I had the same problem for years... we bought a memory foam mattress pad and it hasn't happened since. I think our mattress is just too firm.

happens to me as well - I have a herniated disc that send spain down my left arm and sometimes my right. I had it cheacked by a few different docs and all said the same - "not a good idea for surgery yet, loose some weight and exercise".

I average about 4 hours per night - always have. The little time I am asleep. the pain is acceptble.

That would have scared me, especially because most people are really out of it when they first wake up.
