I'm going to sort of agree with Britt.. Cookout burgers are about the best fastfood burger you can get, at least here in the carolinas

Best burger I have ever had was in Pittsburg years ago at some small bar. It had frenchfies and coleslaw on it. I can't recall the name of the place, but the locals all knew the place well for it's burgers.

As a side note the best dog I ever had was at spring break in Daytona one year at a joint named TC's top dog or something like that. It also involved coleslaw. I was pretty drunk at the time so my tastebuds may have skewed!

Try the new fancy buger made from several cuts of premium beef at Ruby Tuesday's - actually a pretty tasty burger.

Could be, I was just bar hopping with some friends at the time and it was about twenty years ago. The fact that I remember it twenty years ago means it WAS a d@mn good burger!

Chain -- Fuddrucker's
All-around -- Walker's on Varick and N. Moore in NYC. Never ever had better, anywhere.
Best experience -- Blimpy Burger, Ann Arbor, MI. Its motto is "Cheaper than Food." How can you go wrong?

My favorite burgers are the ones I make myself. There's simply nothing like the taste of fresh ground chuck 'n sirloin. From the grinder to the fridge (for a quick chill) and it's off to the grill.

Just had one of those $10 "superburgers" at Ruby Tuesdays. We were really not all that impressed for the $$$. Their salad bar is marginal as well. But, it is right next to Sam's where we go about three times a year, so it is convenient.

...and I was going to try them out. Will think twice now.

To further explain my answer, alot of times I like my burgers rare/medium (as opposed to medium/rare). Unless I know exactly what quality/condition the meat is in when ground and the equipment used I wouldn't take the chance. Also, some places will not prepare anything rarer then medium.

Did a search on Primati Brothers. That is the place! I highly recommend it to anyone who travels to Pittsburgh.

Hot, fast, and greasy, a Primanti Brother's sandwich is a meal all by itself. The cheesesteak version (a burger, not shaved steak) is the most popular, but there are plenty of other meaty choices. The fries are hand-cut, the slaw tangy, and the bread warm and crusty, the way good Italian bread should be. Just about the most filling sandwich you'll find anywhere - imitated by many, but equaled by few.

+1 on johnny rockets "#12 w/ no mayo please" as well as fuddruckers.

then there's this place if you're in boston (cambridge side)
"Bartleys"

while it may not be "THE best" burger out there, the sheer variety and combination of how they're served definitely warrants a tasting or four.

I was in the States for the Nascar race in July. I had lots of burgers from American chain restaurants. I went to Jack In The Box in North Carolina, Ruby Tuesday"s in Daytona and Checkers and I have to say they were all pretty good. As a side bar we stopped at Long John Silvers, we couldn't tell the difference between the fish or chicken. It was HORRIBLE.

ahhhhhhhhhh bartleys. Or more formally, Mr. and Mrs Bartley's Burger Cottage. I remember the harvard burger, which was 2 7oz patties, it was at least 8" tall, it was awesome. Big long tables, you just squeezed in anywhere. Crap now I want a burger...
