Canadian speeding ticket
So I got stopped this am in Canada ( doing a lousy 139 Km in a 100Km zone). B@@stards in Canada want $271 for a ticket. I looked up on the internet and there is no receprocity between Canada and NH. So I'm thinking " why pay the stinking ticket"???
What do you guys think ?? T

Please dear god don't let the goddamn government tax rapists get your fine!!! I'm on a bit of a tear against the gov't these days
![]() But isn't reciprocity between state and province, rather than state and country? Just make sure you're not digging yourself a hole. And please remember - Canada is a great country DESPITE the government! ![]()

![]() So how did the track weekend go????? If you were coming back at 139k, then I assume the car performed well? Did you have fun?

It is a ridiculous amount I agree. But you have to balance the money saved by not paying against the likelihood of your being stopped in Canada again. If that is even remotely possible - you should think about this carefully - because if a fine is not paid in Canada within 30 days they tend to increase exponentially. If this happens then you will be truly fracked - because you will surely be in their computer system and they will throw the book at you.

The mounties don't do speeding tickets - they do more FBI-type stuff. Speeding tickets are handled by city police, or, outside cities, by provincial police. Provincial police are supposed to handle all sorts of things, including highway enforcement, but you never hear of them doing anything but speeding tickets. Google Caledonia and read up on how they're not doing their job. The Ontario Provincial Police are pretty damn low in the PR dept. right now.

I'm surprised you were stopped for 140k -- that's pretty much the unofficial speed limit on the 401 round here. Were you driving aggressively? Of course, it was a long weekend in Ontario, and the OPP were doing a "safety blitz" (read cash grab).

If you only have two choices; paying it or not, just pay it.
Oh, and remember $271 Canadian is like $244 US.

Be glad they didn't take your radar/laser detector(if you had one). I say pay the ticket, it will go towards health care.

Nope, not paying it , besides I'll be switching state driving licenses before too long!.
Janus, we had a great time!!! Only went 4 wheels off once! Chris seemed in awe of a Nagaro Blue 911 parked next to us.. He's a great pit ***** to bring along. I lent him out to a bunch of people who needed mechanic stuff done and he didn't eat too much!!!

Doing 85 on the 401 rates a ticket in any state or providence. Pay up.
I detest radar, speed traps, etc. But 80 is a reasonable limit on the 401 and I think 85 is an ok point to pick off the speeders. I have traveled the 401 many many times. PS I am in favor of 90 Mph limits in most places. Last edited by snowman; 08-09-2006 at 10:27 PM.. |

They will usually leave you alone if you don't go over 120kmh and don't weave in and out of traffic.

My family and I have been in Ontario on vacation for the last 2 1/2 weeks and have driven along the 401 a lot. They have signs every few miles explaining the speed and fines associated with them. They clearly show how the fines go up drastically the faster you exceed the limit.
The way I see it You are visiting a foreign country therefore a guest there. You are knowingly breaking their laws You are exceeding their speed limit by almost forty percent! (which is the like doing 91mph in a 65 mph zone) You get caught and now don't want to be responsible for your actions. You ask us what we think. Here's what I think. You did it, man up and pay the fine. Try being responsible for you actions Steve

Part of the issue is that on a lot of the 400 series highways around toronto there is a speed limit and then there is the speed that most travel. traveling at the speed limit would probably attract a tow truck as I am sure they would assume your car is broken.
9dreizig may have been going 40% over but traffic noramally flows in the 120 - 130Km/h range. I was nabbed on the 400 at 130km/h late at night with light traffic. During the day during rush hour the average speed is somewhere in the 130km/h to 140km/h range with some well over 150km/h. The rules arent fair and getting caught sucks but the rules are plain to see as are the concequences. pay up ![]() |

FYI: When I signed up with Hagerty Insurance they said I would not be covered in Canada when I asked. I don't know what complication a similar speeding ticket would cause some of us in the same position as you.
Just throwing it out there. Will your insurance company ever find out?

I think with my classic car insurance (Silver Wheels) if you notify them they will adjust your rate if you take your car on vacation. Maybe it is the same with Hagerty.

THe ONLY times I have been nabbed for speeding is when I was the only car on the road. When traffic is heavy you go with the flow, 80,90, whatever, but late at night, when you are alone and can be picked off by radar, your screwed.
I happen to think this is total BS as the safest times to speed is when you are alone, but thats the facts we all have to live with. |
