you are telling an expert in the field that he doesn't know what he's talking about based on your "common sense" and reading some journal articles (and maybe even understanding them). I'm trying to get at how exactly you can read complicated scientific studies (its more than art) and make the sweeping pronouncements that you do. Ordinarily one would expect some modicum of technical expertise to be able to do such a thing. Perhaps you're just brilliant?

This particular study speaks for itself, an unusual, clear, well written abstract. Facts are difficult to argue with.

oh, you read the *abstract* and not the full paper. I see...

Science isn't art. Science is deductive. Art is the polar opposite.

I may not know what a "cv" is, but I know science is not art.

Eh, screw this, Todd. It's 11:38 PM. Let's go for a night ride on the bikes, have some beers and shots before the bars close, and follow it up with a couple In n' Out 4x4s...

snowman 08-10-2006 10:40 PM

Thats absolutely true, science is not art. Medicine is ART, the Art of medicine, it is not science. I wish it was science, but it is not. No one that is an MD will argue that medicine is not an art. They prefer to think of it as a science, but alas it is not. Once medicine becomes a science, diagnosis will not be a guess, treatment, again not a guess, the biological workings of the human, not a fairytale, but fact.

sorry man, I'm up at Big Bear Lake on vacation with the boy:

http://nostatic.com/blog/

back to LA tomorrow though...and maybe I'll just inject lard directly into my temples. Although some chili cheese fries from Tommy's sounds a lot more appetizing.

snowman 08-10-2006 10:46 PM

Go with Tommys cheese fries.

You all can't stay up later than I do, cause I am retired, and I do not have to get up for anything, anytime. Just rubbing it in to make me feel alive. No profession, no job, no anything.

And I am smarter than anyone, anywhere, just ask me.

I am also more humble than anyone, anywhere. Cuz I say so.

Want to argue? I am right, your are wrong, period. Prove differen't.

dd74 08-10-2006 11:08 PM

Well, Todd can't make a (now) midnight bike ride. Snowman, I only need five hours sleep, so how 'bout it? Put your bike stuff on. We'll discuss fat burning during some fat burning hillclimbs. ;)

snowman 08-10-2006 11:36 PM

I used to do those silly bike rides. Then a friend of mine was trampled by a horse, thrown off a 200 foot cliff. I gave up those silly bike rides for Porsche rides.

That doesn't make sense: a friend gets trampled by a horse, somehow thrown off a 200-foot cliff, and it's related to bike rides being silly and you riding in a Porsche?

So you don't drive your Porsches; you "ride" in them?

Now that is silly, Jack. SmileWavy

Modern medicine is fighting a lost race against the Western manīs ignorant habit of abusing his body.

On the other, our bodies are not 'designed' to last a hundred years since that would be of no advantage to our genes. As soon as we are done breeding and safely raising offspring, we basically become obsolete, a burden and a liability.

Come to think of it - maybe this is what our genes have come to 'realize'. Modern medicine keeps raising the life expectancy age. To counteract the genetic disadvantage of this, the genes 'make' us eat a lot more calories than we need and 'force' us to exercise our bodies too little - making us destroy our bodies and shorten our lives.

Far out ! :D

Back in the depression. Naturally you've heard the term "clean plate club" and "think of the starving people in India". Our parents, and their parents before them encouraged us to not waste food. We were told as children to finish everything on our plates because times weren't always so good . Now the die is cast and we feel we need to eat everything on that plate. Furtheremore, because times are relatively good, today's dining experience is bigger, better, more. Okay-maybe not better. Here in Wisconsin, the restaurants with the most cars in the lot are the ones that pile it high and wide. Doesn't matter that the food is crap-just that there is plenty of it.

There is no "clean plate club" mentality in our home. All of us rarely finish what is on the plate. I haven't been to McDs in years which is saying a lot because I travel a lot. We avoid all-you-can -eat restaurants and very often, my wife and I will split meals when we dine out. I always feel I have to explain that we're not being cheap, we simply don't want to get stuffed. We prefer to have our meal in courses-salad, appetizers, entre, and desert w/espresso.

Used to be the fat kid was the exception. Now he's the norm. Childhood diabetes is practically epidemic here in America. Parents had better wake up!

HardDrive 08-11-2006 03:34 AM

Spent the last 2 weeks outside the US.

People in the US are fat because they eat like f*cking pigs. Americans will eat whatever slop you shovel in front of them, just make sure there is plenty of it.

130 calorie liquid dinner, brilliant!

I think stating that fast food is responsible for humans living longer is idiotic. Though snowman may have stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night, I'd have to side with the pros. Modern medicine is amazing, hell maybe it's too good. Back in the day if you had a heart attack you were a goner, now some people have three or four. Back in the day there were no concerns about overpopulation either.

Not saying an occasional burger and fries will kill you, but like with most things, moderation is key. On a side note, McD's has chicken snack wraps that aren't half bad, and only $1 each. May not be health food, but chicken, lettuce and ranch in a tortilla beats a Big Mac.

charleskieffner 08-11-2006 04:33 AM

and the best part.................it gives you that "full feeling" LOL!

hey heres an interesting note. friend of mine after blowing his anal "O"-RING, turned vegetarian............no meat..........NONE. he used to be in shape. now after years of the vegetarian diet............HES FAT! now go figure that one???? well after observing him eat last time i saw him. cheese sandwiches, cheese this cheese that, pasta pasta pasta. give me a break! i can figure that out! anyway there are some people pre-disposed to weight gain. but for the most of us it is that damn fast food. i live in an area that doesnt have fast food close. so you have to really put your mind to the fact you want some. its not on every corner. if you eat a VARIED DIET, literally around the food groups every day you should be ok.

since its hot as hell here, usually the only time i eat something in the morning is to quell coffee gut. lunch your not really hungry due to heat and when you get home, i usually just munch on varied items. by no means am i charles atlas but for 48 i can barely pinch an inch on my stomach. im 6'3" 200 pounds and feel great. now watch i'll keel over in an hour!

g/friend and i eat alot of fish w/a couple times a week some meat. burger steak chicken. when we go out its usually mexican (go figure?) or chinese or suishi. when eating mexican food rarely is it the muy grande el gordo chimichanga smothered in guac and sour cream. usually its rellenos/fish tacos. neither of us drink alot of soft drinks, usually water/tea/juice or beer.

but i will admit we have sweet tooths and look out when the chocolate cravings start!

funny how the things you like the most are the worst for you! ever read whats in HOSTESS CUPCAKES? ........................DONT!

charleskieffner 08-11-2006 04:36 AM

side note.................studies have shown the 2 healthiest diets in the world are mexican foods(traditional not a chimichanga) and oriental food. you really dont see alot of obese mexicans unless close to the U.S. border(fast food) nor alot of obese orientals.

LOL, have ya ever BEEN to Mexico??

The ones that aren't fat are skinny because THEY CAN'T AFFORD FOOD!!!

Yeesh.

Sorry I missed the whole mega-fat diet is good for you discussion, suffice to say that Art is (of course) dead on...

Keep eating all that fast food Snow...get back to us in 15 or 20 years. Better yet, just make an appointment with Art for 15 years in the future, he can do your stent at that time.

motion 08-11-2006 06:11 AM

Interesting... the places we frequent in the neighborhood tend to have small portions. Here's a little something from the Stonehill Tavern at the St. Regis a few nights ago. Now, head east to Oceanside or Riverside and magically, the portions quadruple in size. I wonder why?

Nathans_Dad 08-11-2006 06:17 AM

By the way, in response to the original topic. I don't think that the portion size is really the problem, the problem is that Americans think they need to EAT that entire portion. My wife and I usually split one entree when we go out to eat, we both are full and our bill is half of what it could be.

BTW, Motion, we don't have any sissy stuff that that here in Texas!! I think that meal would blow off the plate if you sneezed...
