Corolla Civic or Mazda 3

What better place to ask then a Porsche board

Wife is looking for an inexpensive car (lease, insurance, gas). It will be used mainly for around town driving and the occasional highway trip with the 2 kids. From what I see prices are similar enough to call them even.

I have my opinions but am interested in others.

buying criteria are;

Reliability
safety
relatively sporty

Check out the Honda Fit. They're reputed to be VERY good handling cars. One group ran the slalom 1mph slower than the Z06 'vette.

I have one on order... there is a bit of a wait.

Reliability: It's a Honda
Safety: ***** frontal crash rating, airbags all around, ABS, etc
Sporty: Not amazingly fast, but handles very well

I'd recommend the Mazda3. The base motor is really lovely -- likes to rev, and it has around 145 hp.

Those little Mazdas look great. Have to say tho, we hired on a couple of occasions current Corollas (all we could with manual box) to do some tarmac rally recces, and we were amazed by how good the RocknRoller was. For a little FWD shopping cart, we speculated that with some sticky tires, we wouldnt have gone a lot faster in the rally car than the Corollo was going. Great brakes, stopped all day.

We were looking at used BMW 3 Series when we bought our Mazda 3S. Two years later and we still love it. Here's a good 3 vs Civic article:

Though I recommended the 3, my mother's 06 Corolla gets 40 plus MPG.

Whichever has the cheapest aftermarket exhaust with a 4" diameter tip.

Civic, maybe not a bling as the 3, but solid reputation and great resale.
