good news (so far): no grafts

My colleague did a house call tonight and poked around my knee wound. Said to just keep it clean, change the dressing every day (damp) and try to not flex the knee. It's going to take awhile to heal, as it it a pretty big hole and it moves every time I flex my leg. The foot is the same story, but flex isn't an issue. So barring infection, this should turn out OK, just slow. The g/f sees the orthopedic guy tomorrow, but my colleague checked out her films (they gave her a CD at the hospital) and said they looked good.

Still processing how lucky we were, and we're not sure what to make of it all. Thanks for all the well wishes. It never ceases to amaze me how great the people on this board are. Cheers.

Dressing changes (often) and once you up a bit..go splash about in the Ocean , while not sterile..it works.

Um, I have to SERIOUSLY disagree with the splashing around in the ocean advice. The guy narrowly avoided a septic arthritis, splashing around in the ocean with all its glorious bacteria is not a good idea on an open wound...

Rick, wasn't suggesting he do it now, and if he does.choose a somewhat clean beach.
Me, was recovering from some serious burns and was healing nicely..the beach and sun kicked it up a few notches.

There are no clean beaches in SoCal. Sailing offshore (well offshore) before you get to 'clean' water. You don't notice it going out. But is overpowering coming back in.

He should not enter the ocean until the skin has completely grown over the wound. It's that simple.

I'm glad the sun and beach helped your burns, but if you still had open wounds you were very lucky you did not end up with a serious infection.

Great aid with road rash is to keep the area moist using Vitamin E gel or pure aloe. It helps the skin heal while remaining soft. It also reduces scarring.

While it does seem to speed healing...it also reduces the size of his "badge of honor".

A good tattoo artist can augment the "badge of honor".
I'd also consider mixing a little neosporin with the aloe to speed up the healing process. It really helps keep the nerve ending quiet as they return to service. If I recall the itching and "pain spikes" can persist for quite a while.

just hit the other knee with a hammer, that'll take the pain away from the first knee...

seriously guys, this thread is seriously soft.. no gore pics, "lotions" , talk about preventing scars...

what's next?? suggestions to start knitting , to take the mind away from the pain ??

next thing you know , Nostatic will start thinking about buying a Toyota Prius and paint flowers all over it... and drive around with the latest Jessica Simpson CD on repeat...it's just not right...

Except for the Jessica Simpson crossdresser I thought you were describing a 1960's flashback.

while i'd love to see some of the gore too, i remember reading that todd mentioned in the original thread that he won't be posting those, so i'll just respect that and leave it alone.

funny... when it happened to me i didn't own a dig cam yet so i've got no pics at all of my bloody knees...
