Bad art? There's a museum for it in Boston. The Museum of Bad Art (MOBA). No, I'm not kidding.

It's in Dedham technically and yes, I've been there. Many times. My parents live in Norwood (about 5 miles from it). :) That's awesome you're aware of it. . .

Disturbing? Yes. That work, like other surrealist art, is more supposed to disrupt than disturb. The disturbing factor, in fact, is the hook. The disruption is when you try to make sense of what is being said on the canvas.
DeChirico wanted to portray dreams - metaphysics was the term he used. I can't remember if the DeChirico that was posted here is "Dream of the Poet", but in person (at MOMA in NY), the painting, if you allow it, seeps the viewer into another dimension. The shading is thick, the angles continue infinitely, and usually whatever figures seen, have no identity. The stuff really makes you stop and think. Case in point (if you can see it on the computer screen) is Melancholy: http://sulanorte.blogs.sapo.pt/arqui...Melancolia.JPG |
Izzy - Art is the soul calling out. Sometimes the soul has beautiful part and sometimes it has a dark part and sometimes it is ... well, it has a a Ronalda McDonald nursing a fat kid part. Art works when souls speak to each other. If there is a painting that speaks to you in a tough way more than the others - the art did its job. If there is a sculpture that makes you weep - the art did its job. If there is a song that makes you cry - the art did its job.
I am sure I will never eat at McDonalds again though... |
if art doesn't challenge, it's just a pretty picture. Or not.
I kinda like the lighting on the first pic of my knee wound. It's art to me :p |
the challenge Todd would have been getting a pic of your flesh remains on the pavement - now that would have been art!
|
Or a picture of the ants feeding on the comingled blood of you and your girlfriend on the pavement.
|
Will somebody please do something about the McDonald's lady? Please?

I don't find them disturbing - Should I be worried
|
Humor, and good art have something in common:
The juxtaposition of the incongruous. Both make you think. ( forgive the sp) |

I just can't get myself to look again to confirm your excellent analysis :) |
The McDonalds mom depicts the marvelous ability of the fast food industry to adequately nourish the world. The only thing lacking is an apple pie.
