people that only talk about working out.

annoys the heck out of me. i have this one dude i share an office with. that is all he ever talks about. he just ponied up $800 for some membership at 24, he only talks about what he eats, what he did at the gym, how long he spent there, how many calories the stairmaster said he burned....blah blah blah... is this some sort of "badge of honor"? hell, i know some chick that is the exact same way. i should hook them up.

Actions speak louder than words: I don'just t talk about working out, I send $30/month to the gym to guard against my ever wanting to actually work out.

To quote K911SC, "That's tight!". Seriously, I am sore all over from kayaking this weekend but I'm going to the gym tonight, punk.

You need to pic up a copy of Flex Magazine. Those guys (and gals) are serious. Twenty years ago when Arnold the Governor were at it, it was mostly hoisting big chunks of iron and forking down ten pounds of bloody beef daily. Nowadays its rocket science. Correct diet is everything. I can understand your co - worker. If he is deep into that porridge its like a venom. Everything else in his life is just a side show. Totally absorbed and well...nuts.

I would sit and type and explanation to you like a geek but I have a date with a barbell in a couple of minutes and I have to go burn some calories now.

I work out at the local university--not the meat markets. There was this pretty-boy (pretty rare) at the gym the other night. He would be talking to his friends in the corner until a good looking woman came into the weight room, then he'd start doing some exercise and shouting across the gym at them bragging about how much weight he was doing--an obvious ploy to draw attention to himself. As soon as the woman left he'd go back to talking with his buddies in the corner.

After maybe two cycles of this...I got sick of it.

Every time he did an exercise, I'd give him maybe one or two sets (with bragging). Then I'd stand near him and start doing the same exercise...at at least twice the weight. Suddenly he wasn't so interested in calling attention to himself.

If any of my colleagues are seen in the gym, they are either gay or newly divorced, broke and on the prowl.

Funny, 2-3 of the people I work with go to the gym every lunch hour, they pay $40-80 a month.

I just take the stairs 2 twice a day. It's convenient, it doesn't cost me anything and I don't have to scramble to fit it into my day. I'm on the 17th floor, so it's a pretty solid 7 minutes each time. I've done it in `5 minutes before, but I end up panting and wheezing in the office, and everyone made fun of me for a week.

FWIW, I lost 25lbs in 2-3 months by doing this.

Sort of like when I was at the bar in Hawaii, I'm trying to enjoy the blue sky's, the green mountains, the fresh air, the cute bartender, and my Mai Tai...

Then these two middle age guys come in and one of them starts talking real loud about all the rock stars they had hung with... I was on Mick's plane and we were snorting... and I partied with so and so...

Ohhh you were a drug dealer, you mom must be so proud.

I quietly moved to the other end of the bar.

On topic, I sort of dated a girl like you describe, lived in the gym... nut job... a very pretty nut job BTW.

Seriously? I have a family membership at the gym for my wife, my son and myself. Its good for my wife bacause there is daycare so she can execise in peace.

I meet my little brother every morning at 6:30-6:45 to bike for 20-45 minutes (dependingon the day) then to the gym for about 30 minutes of weight training.

I do this so I can eat what I want and drink beer without gaining weight.

FWIW I didn't mean to imply that all people that go to the gym are nut jobs. It's a great way for some people to keep healthy. It's just when it becomes excesive behavior, sort of like I have no problem if you want to go to a bar once in a while but if that is how you spend all you spare time you may have a problem.

My sole motivation is to be able to eat and drink beer like I was 19 years old again, you know, when nothing stuck to you.

Yup, of all my hobbies, the 911 and this board sucks up most of my free time. I'm trying to break free by getting involved in less expensive hobbies.
