Check out Elephant's Dream, an animated movie made with all Free tools. And sometimes, Free is better than free.

Never could get used to the blender interface.
My current weapon of choice is Maxon's Cinema 4D. Have Carrara but things that should be simple to do in it are a PIA. Have you tried Modo? Looks promising. I've also got 3ds Max running under Parrallels on my Mac.
