Our 7yr Old Son has a Girl Friend – How to Handle & What to Do?
When our Boy started 1st grade he met a girl in his class that he became smitten with. Throughout the year he showed little if any interest in any other girl in any circumstance but she was always a person he became real calm around and had this silly grin on his face. We actually met her and her parents at a play last year that he really wanted to see. He has confided in me that he thinks that this girl is the nicest girl he has every met, he can’t explain why he likes her so much but he assures me that she is who he wants to marry. She is a very nice, cute girl. Her Dad is cool and Mommy is hot.
Funny thing about the play, our son is not artsy but he knew she was going the play and talked us into going without having us understanding his motives till we were at the play. The Mom told us that her little girl always talks about our Son and says that he is the nicest boy in the world and often makes sure she is doing OK and is very protective of her. It was obvious that she is smitten with him as well. He actually saved some money and bought her some earrings and gave them to her that last day of school. My Wife cleared it with her Mom prior. He actually waited 3 weeks before he gave them and had me prep him on what to say when he gave them to her. Talk about getting a lump in your throat! School has started and maybe the Gods of love are looking out for them because they are in the same class again this year. They both want to get together at each other after school. Now here is the stickler – Mommy doesn’t think it is a good idea. She is cool with having them meet at park or someplace like that but is uncomfortable with having our son with his “girl friend” at either ones house. I asked if she had talked to the girls parents about this and she hasn’t. Knowing our son, he would show her complete respect but he would also like to show off for her. At first I didn’t have an issue with it until my Wife asked me to consider the situation if it was our lil Girl instead. Hmmm. I would not let our lil Girl go. Double standard? Yup. So, what would you guys do?

I was raised with as many neighboorhood girls as boys in the 0-10yr days.
Let them go for it. Any future issues will mean parents will be around to instill wisdom on the situation. Both of them will have a clear head for the future if the parents don't waste the opportunity.

like father like son ! cool! a man of the seas. just watched the first johhny depp pirates dvd. saw the 2nd 2 weeks ago. arrrrrrgggghhhh a pirates life for me. nothing wrong with him being smitten. both my boys started early and got their hearts broke also. finicky women you know the drill. other guys i guess had more candy or liked playing with barbies more than my kids. either way its healthy and he will learn how to treat a women at an early age with a little bit of couching from dad.
if they even kissed each other id be amazed at that age. but on the other hand its a good prelude to the birds and bees speech you and your wife get to do. sex education is smart education. |

Even though the world has seemingly gone insane, I don't think this sounds like anything resembling trouble.
I remember having a serious crush on a girl at 7 or 8 - it was all very innocent. Really. It sounds like he already knows about the proper respect for women....uh....girls....whatever. Sounds like you've got a good kid on your hands.

Hey! At least he doesn't have the hots for Steve!!
I have to share a quote from one of our TV pilots that never got picked up. "Well I wanted a girl, but I got a boy, then I got to thinking well this way I only have to worry about one penis, not a hundred".

I know he doesn't "know" that sort of thing yet. If she visited him, it would be more about him showing her all his stuff and trying to impress her - I have no idea what they would do at her house, most likely do some sort of craft or play some sort of board game or something like that.

I don't care whether you have a daughter or a son....it's a parents responsibilty to keep them from doing something stupid....
The first boy that comes over to my daughter's door gets the gun collection walk thru.....then I tell him that if my daughter cries...so will he.

When my daughter first started dating, I just told the boys that I had 18 acres, a shovel and a bag of lime. Never seemed to have any problems..... Except the dumbasses wondered why I had a bag of limes (for Corona Beers).

Ride it out. When was your earliest infatuation? I remember being infatuated with a friend's mom (My dad seemed to like her too), a neighbor, a babysitter and the beat goes on.
I don't think there is anything wrong, he doesn't "know" what to do yet so...ride it out. I'm glad I don't have a daughter yet.
