I can't wait until the Iraqi Prime Minister puts a bounty on the head of American soldiers, the same ones giving their lives to restore order for his government.

The Bush idiot brigade will then want to talk about Sandy Berger or Monica Lewinsky.

American lives and treasure to consolidate power for a government that wants to build monuments to anyone that kills an American soldier. You sir are a callous fool.

lendaddy 08-31-2006 07:07 AM

Oh, so you apologize now for the attention you gave the story before, you were a foolish, callous asshat..........but you're better now.

Bill, this statement is so preposterous and out of line that one scarcely knows where to begin...

First: Hitch writes for Slate, Vanity Fair, and the Atlantic Monthly (and he writes books). Those are not conservative publications -- not by a long shot. Slate is center-left, VF is far left, and the Atlantic is basically centrist and non-political (he writes about books, not politics, in the Atlantic).

Second: Hitch is taken very seriously by serious journalists, to the point of serious admiration. I hang out with more than a few journalists, and even those who dislike Hitch's politics have a great deal of respect for his wit, intellect, writing style, and iconoclastic politics. He is by no means a "neocon," and if you were able to muster even a shred of intellectual curiousity about anything, you'd know that, because like some of us you'd have been reading Hitchens for years.

More importantly, if you're going to continue to throw out the "neocon" allegation, you really should save yourself some embarrassment and actually learn what neoconservatism is. Right now you use the word as an epithet directed toward most everything you dislike, and you might be surprised to learn that there are lots of things you hate or think foolish, that have nothing to do with neoconservatism. Again, it's really getting embarrassingly silly.

All of which adds up to your opinion.

If you actually read what I wrote, you would discover that I use the word neocon with precision. Hitchens has described himself as a neoconservative. He has also said he has not changed views much since identifying himself as a Trotskyite and socialist. Maybe you should think about how those things fit together. You know, and read a bit.

my youngest son is a Marine Lance Corporal currently walking the streets in a city in Iraq. the notion that not backing or not questioning the admins policys warrants a "traitor' label, or implies a person does not support the valiant service personel is absurd at best, insulting at worst. frankly, unless you folks know EXACTLY what the current, hamstringing (is that a word? i think you get the drift), rules of engagement are, you might be advised to sit quitely by and observe before marching in lock step.

rumsfeld stated in a speach to troops the an army doesn't go to war with what they want, but with what they have. my son took care of that by spending the better part of $2k of his OWN money on goods that will hopefully save his life.

what i find ironic is, that to my knowledge, there is no member of the extended bush family participating in this noble cause by rushing to their local recruiting office. let one or both of his little drunken tart daughters drive a humvee through the streets of bagdad, tircrit, etc. show ME the cause is just with pictures of the tarts with THEIR right hands in the air taking the oath.

you armchair generals are clueless. sorry.

I am very sorry your son is there. I had heard that the rules were changed to disallow privately purchased body armor. It sounds like that was bad info.

You're right, we are all relying on third-party info on what it's like on the ground. I served during Vietnam but for the most part was stationed at Ft. Lewis. My friends who went to Nam and came back told stories still not comprehended by most Americans -- whose ideas of combat come from Hollywood.

Please pass along good wishes.

Rodeo 08-31-2006 08:02 AM

Wow, that was powerful.

Godspeed to your son, Kevin. I hope he comes home safely soon.

I think that's a big part of what's wrong with the Iraq war: the people who are pushing hardest for it have no personal exposure apart from some political captial and their stock portfolios, the latter having done very well as a result. It's the kids from Flyoverville who pay the price, not the drunken society tarts and frat boys.

The average American has more of a personal stake in the office football pool than they do in the Iraq war, which is why it's so easy for them to defend it. When called on it, all they have to do is post some WTC pix. The only pain that most Americans have felt from the war are spikes in gas prices. HAL and XOM have replaced war bonds as the patriotic instrument of choice.

Hey, what is an asshat anyhow?

Asses don't wear hats...they would fall off unless you were standing on your head.

it's got a name: the bravery of being out of range.

buying personal body armor is "discouraged". being "pro-active" is "discourgaged". being "re-active" is the approved policy.

i note it's a balmy 108* in bagdad today (i check the weather everyday. i don't know why). is there really any noticeable dif between that and 115, 116, 117*? imagine being on patrol while lugging 60lbs+ of gear. i tried on my son's armor vest. it nearly drove me to the ground.

my son is "short" (210 days left on a 4 year hitch) and is anticipating his voluntary active duty enlistment being involuntarily extended. this is his second foray into the ***** hole. every day i don't get a phone call or have to placate his grieving mother is a good day.

That makes lendaddy the bravest guy here.

lendaddy 08-31-2006 08:37 AM

My brother told similar stories of Somalia (regarding reactive only use of force), this was not a popular thing.

not enlisted = cannot support

You guys are brilliant:rolleyes:

techweenie 08-31-2006 08:44 AM

And yet you described him as a "nuclear ambassador."

Presumably you are aware that a cache of enriched uranium was discovered in Iraq in GW1 and left behind because Iraq had no means of weaponizing it?

Perhaps you're aware that yellowcake is only slightly refined uranium ore? And that Niger is 1.) IAEA compliant, and 2.) probably doesn't have the amount of yellowcake presumably desired by Iraq?

You probably know that eastern Iraq is estimated to have many hundreds of tons of uranium ore -- accessible to mining?

You probably know that there is something like a 40:1 ratio of yellowcake to the level of enrichment suitable for weapons, and that enrichment facilities are few, far between and regulated or closely observed?

That having weaponized uranium isn't tantamount to having an operational weapon?

That Iraq had no means of accurate delivery of such a weapon? That SCUDs are closely related to V2s, technologically? i.e. not guided? That Iraq had no missiles to deliver a weapon payload more than about 700 miles?

Support?

Support????

That's what you call forcing our men and women in uniform to defend a terrorist government? Supporting them?

You've already said you wouldn't want your child there. That you back the president's forcing others' children to fight in Iraq is just beyond my comprehension.

I can't imagine anyone as callous as you, yet you claim to "support" these men and women?

Here's what you are forcing them to die for, so Iraq can partner with our enemy and the baddest player in the Middle East, Syria. Wake up!

Damascus, August 02 (SANA)-

President Bashar al-Assad and Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament Dr. Mahmoud Daoud Mashhadani on Wednesday discussed means of boosting the bilateral relations between the two sisterly countries Syria and Iraq.

Talks during the meeting dealt with helping the Iraqi people overcome the difficulties and maintain national unity and territorial integrity until ending the occupation.

President Assad stressed Syria's support to the political process in Iraq. Both sides also reviewed the developments of the Israeli aggression on Lebanon.

No parent ever wants their child in danger, FOR ANYTHING. Please list the causes you would sacrifice your child for.......................

A swear your IQ drops daily. I suggest remedial comprehension courses.

But it's perfectly acceptable to send someone else's kids off to die, right?

If you mean off to war then yes ofcourse it's ok, it's not possible to have a war without doing so. Obviously this was not a serious question. If it was I suggest you carpool with Rodeo to his remedial courses.

lendaddy 08-31-2006 09:31 AM

Still waiting for that list Rodeo........what causes will you give your chidren for? Hypothetical is OK.
