Honor thy gun dealer?
So I'm buying a rifle. I have a local dealer that has been good to me. Really spent a lot of time with me when I was buying my first pistol. Father/son shop (Discount Gun Sales, Kirkland, WA). I can pick up this rifle for $569 at the local GI Joes. They want $639 for it, so $60 more. I asked them if they could match the price, and they said no.
Common sense says, "Duh!", just go to GI Joes. So why do I feel bad about it? What would you do? PS. $60 ain't exactly going to ruin me.

Customer service? G.I. Joes wouldn't be as likely to help if you have any problems with the rifle.

Take the number of years you plan to keep the rifle and divide it into $60. See if the answer says anything. Sometimes I buy things to support small businesses with the idea the difference I pay won't be a lot over the long run, will help keep some small guy in business & able to eat, plus good customer service isn't really free time spent with you or any other customer.. You have to pay a plumber or any other service a lot more than $60 just to come out to look at something nowadays.

I love GI Joes, but for $60 go with the local guy that gave you great service and will continue to do so.

I've never regreted spending more for quality or service, but I've been pissed at myself several times for buying on price alone.

You would think that, if they are still making a profit, they'd jump at the opportunity to make the sale and keep a satisfied customer very satisfied. At the same time, if it is a high-demand item, and they know they are likely to sell it next week at their asking price, I can understand them not wanting to sell it to you at the lower price. If it's a slow selling item and it sits in their store for another year, they're foolish to not sell it to you at the lower price now. Personally, I don't get too "sentimental" about business. If I want something custom with lots of customer service during the sale, I wouldn't mind paying extra, but if I'm buying a mass-produced item without any extra "customer service" items needed during the transaction, I would just buy from whoever can sell the item to me cheapest. |

I go out of my way to spend my money at small stores that provide great service. I gladly spend the extra cash. Good people at good shops are hard to find, so when you do, you don't worry about little chunks of money. |

FWIW, Discount Guns is a great shop. If you buy this rifle at G.I Joes I'll have to hunt you down and well, you know... oops, left myself open for clarification...

I buy stuff at a local small Italian deli, I could get it cheaper at a supermarket but the place is run by the original owners son (or possibly grandson). That and the place SMELLS like a Italian deli, they cut all there own meat, I can get imported Italian olive oil, oregano on the stick, Portuguese sardines, they make their own sausage, cure their own olives, I'm getting hungry.... what were we talking about?

So, now that it's decided where you're going to buy the rifle, what are you going to buy, and with what scope???

Went with a classic. I looked at every synthetic under the sun, and I just don't care for the look. Tikka T3 seems like a fine rifle, but at the end of the day, its just kinda homely. Not to fond of the cheap plastic magazine that cost $50 to replace either. Planning on putting a Burris 3x9 on it. Open to suggestions, but I am not spending more than $350 on the scope (less if possible).

(edit) I'll admit to not being up on current prices. Though Leupold's latest and greatest may be above your budget, perhaps this old style one may fit your budget? http://www.leupold.com/products/products_highlights.asp

My first house was over on Benson and 18th in Upland...so do I know Claros...
When I moved there in 1981, Benson was a 2 lane road with Lemon Groves all around. !8th didn't even go through to Wilson. And when I go over the Hill to the Ant Hill, I stay with friends in Upand....17th just West of Euclid.

G.I. Joe's does not sell handguns. They have chosen to take a "politically correct" stance on which guns they will sell to us. Their choice. My choice; no gun purchases from G.I. Joe's no matter how good the deal.
