Red Sox Nation(al) Flag at Half-Mast?

This just in from ESPNRadio:

"It's becoming a question whether the 71 & 60 Red Sox can even finish above .500"

OK, the Sox are down 5 starters as of today, with Ortiz sent back to check a cardiac arrhythmia.* That sounds like a familiar predicament. Like, oh, yeah, the Yankees, who fielding for months a decimated line-up managed to keep pace with, and eventually surpass, the Sox.

heh.

Oh, and keep the hackneyed $ comments. The Sox (and their owners, the New York Times) write checks as large as they can; and their ability to write checks is a function of their degree of success.

ThaaaaAAAT's right -- the NYT owns the Red Sox. The Times can't even be loyal to their home town, which was stupid enough to name a Square after them. How can the NYT be expected to keep its homeland's interests first? (obligatory political content )

JP

* I hope it's obvious that I wish neither Ortiz nor any Red Sox player any personal ill will. Not even Ramirez (whom Francona told my cousin after a few pops is "probably the stupidest athlete I've ever met").

This season has been dismal for them. I'm a lifelong fan (grew up in Boston) but between the loss of Theo Epstein, Johnny Damon and more recently Bronson Arroyo I sorta' figured they were in trouble.

Schilling is good, but one has to wonder how many good seasons he has left in him. Wakefield is a workhorse but likewise getting up there in years. Beckett is a dud. Pappelbon is good, but in classic Sox fashion, you can expect they'll trade him away stupidly. Their pitching rotation just isn't there and in this day and age where power hitters are dime-a-dozen, they need some. Pitching wins games.

Well. . . "just wait 'til next year". My favorite teams from here on out are going to be the Dodgers and whoever beats the Yankees.

Bragging about Oakland's win last night is like rooting for the kid that beats up the school gimp.

Living in New Joisey, I'm a Yankee fan. This past week, I was up on Cape Cod on vacation. While there was a plethora of Bosox paraphernalia in all the shops, there was also a ton of Yankee gear. Granted, there were 'Yanks suck' shirts as well, but there were Yankee caps, shirts...etc. as well.

I asked one of the workers at a sports shop (Olympian Sports, IIRC) why all the Yankee stuff, and their response was, "We're sort of required to have Yankee stuff - since they are such a popular team." I did make a comment, "Really? I thought you were selling that gear to Boston fans who take pleasure in Yankee shirt burnings..."

Funny, I don't much of any Bosox gear around my area.

GO YANKS!

-Z-man.

PS: Boston fans will have to wait another 60 or so years for another penant win, the way they are going.... **ducking for cover**

Respectfully, BULL*****.

I'll bet the combined salaries of the team Boston fielded last night exceeded the payroll of the whole A's team. The A's have been doing more with less for YEARS. The Red Sox merely borrowed a page from the Yankees and tried to outspend the rest of the league.

Just looked it up, the Red Sox had about 40 million dollars more on the field last night than the A's. School gimp?

Me? Pittsburgh Pirates fan...dunno why, other than I liked the team name back in the 1950's, when I was a grade school lad.
So, every morn, I read the rankings, praying that some year they'll climb out of the cellar. Hey, somebody has to root for the perennial losers... (edit) I mean, consistency has to count for something.

Moses -
Any info as to how much $ the Yanks give to the other teams as part of the socialist MLB wealth redistribution policies?

I don't follow baseball closely enough to recall the details, but there is some requirement of money given to the league (other teams) for each dollar spent above a certain threshhold, no?

Do you know when the official end of the Pirate's season is? The opening day of Steelers training camp! Man, your sure know how to pick a team to endure suffering. I'm from Pittsburgh and can't name more then three players, they are that bad. Baseball in general is totally f-ed up.

Rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for the house at a blackjack table. . .
