So, what would happen if a Cat 3 Hurricane hit NYC?
Sure Florida is easy to poke fun at - we have had our share of storms, "the plywood state" as opposed to the sunshine state... Still what would happen if/when a hurricane hits NYC, or washington DC? Or (insert your large eastern seaboard town here).
What happens to home insurance as we know it if that happens? I know crazy - but with Florence briefly pointed that way, it made me think. Then it made me look up some history - and 1938 Hurricane hit Bellport, NY - Long Island... Barometer from that storm... ![]() http://www2.sunysuffolk.edu/mandias/38hurricane/hurricane_future.html ![]() "Coastal New York state is second only behind Florida for the amount of insured coastal property (Insurance Institute for Property Loss Reduction (IIPLR) and Insurance Research Council, 1995) so future hurricanes may have severe economic impact."

It'd suck - that'd mean there'd be more east coasters trying to come to California. . . That's the last thing we want.
Earthquakes. . . remember that. Earthquakes. Stay where you are.

Will never happen. It is a scare tactic designed to counter those preaching that global warming will not cause an increase in violent storms.
(Removing tongue from cheek at this point)

Actually Long Island property insurance rates have gone through the roof.
It is not an "if" but really a "when"? A CAT 3 hitting NYC on a rising tide would do a lot of damage, including flooded basements and subways. Most of downtown and the few blocks near the rivers is in a flood zone as well for the rest of the island + Brooklyn and Queens. Wind wise, I think the big buildings would be o.k. |

You're not supposed to wear white after labor day? Says who? I got a white t-shirt on right now - that bad? I think tomorrow I'll wear my white parachute pants. . .

Can't say I've EVER worn white pumps. White running shoes maybe, but not pumps.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. ![]()

Sounds like Jeremy is bored this year since he didn't get the monthly barrage of hurricanes of last summer. If it was me, I would'nt be as concerned about a city that lies 1500 miles north while I sit on a elongated pennisula surrounded by bathwater.

What about hurricane David, it hit New York in 1984 or was it 85? Landed right in the harbor. I was heading out the Loncoln tunnel as it was comming onto land. That was a fun ride back to Va in a dodge caravan. As if the NJ turnpike isn't fun enough during the dry!

the 1938 Long Island Express moved houses off foundations here. This town only caught an edge of it. I grew up figuring that historically every 10ys on average we get a level 1.
A Level 3 will wash away this town. ![]()
