9/11 conspiracy theorists
http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/09/07/060907192013.3btecvzo.html
I put this link here not in any expectation that it will change the opinion of the "9/11 was an inside job" crowd, but rather to pose the question would ANY evidence be sufficient to draw conspiracy theorists away from their radio-controlled planes / demolition charges / cruise missiles / CIA plot theories.

I'm not convinced 9/11 was an inside job, but there is a huge list of truly bizarre circumstances, including that a series of mock attacks were taking place that day involving NORAD and flight controllers, with the scenarios including hijacked airliners -- which may well have extended response times.
They had F16s alongside Payne Stewart's plane in 27 minutes, but nowhere near four hijacked jets on 9/11.

Many people who are attracted to conspiracy theories do it for psychological comfort -- it helps them get through the day. The thought of random acts of evil, completely out of their or anybody else's control, makes them very uneasy. If they connect these random dots so that all evil leads back to a point (person) who can be controlled, this gives them comfort. The Internet has allowed these people to interact and to build and reinforce their conspiracies. Interesting stuff. It would make a great PhD thesis.

So many groups seeking comfort... along with the conspiracy theorists, there's a subset of people who seem to need authoritarian rule. John Dean recently wrote a whole book about it. Fascinating stuff. http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2006/07/14/triumph_of_the_authoritarians/

Techweenie,
Christian fundamentalists should never be confused with constitutional (Goldwater) conservatives. The influence* of the former on the Republican party is very unfortunate. * still deciding whether there is a real influence, or if it's a campaign tactic the fundamentalists continually fall for.

You can build your own conspiracy theory.
One is that a guy in a cave in Afghanistan brought down WTC #1, 2 and 7. Others can be derived from what you can find here: http://killtown.911review.org/oddities.html

I agree that people need to come up with stories that allow them to feel better or make some sense out of what happens in the world. Much of organized religion falls into that category imho. So do conspiracy theories. I agree that sometimes bad people do bad things. I also think that sometimes it is the people in our own government who are the bad people doing bad things.

If anyone has ever been involved in a controlled demolition and thinks that those tower where brought down by two (one per tower) series of controlled demos after we knowing flew planes into them they are only kidding themselves or worse. They believe every conspiracy then can grasp but have no problem dismissing things like the laws of physics and basic science.

Referencing another thread:
Are conspiracy theories akin to religion, an attempt to explain the unknown?
