Malmsteen/ Vai / Satriani - Voodoo Child / G3 Live!

One for the guitar players.

(But man, Malmsteen has gotten huge compared to the scrawny kid I used to listen to 20 years ago! )

Enjoy!

Randy

I've seen those guys with Eric Johnson and EJ killed them all. Yngwie's fingers look like sausages now. How does he still play so fast?

I saw Satriani and Johnson a couple of months ago in Tampa from the 7th row. I started nodding out during Johnson's set. He plays around with his gear WAY too much for my taste. When ever he would go for a distorted sound, he would kick on a plexi and the volume change from close up was kind of irritating because he wouldn't just do it for solos.....he would do it 3 or 4 times minimum during the course of a tune. Satriani, on the other hand, rocked. I'm an old school amp kinda guy.....i currently own a 66 Vibrolux, custom handwired 50w Plexi, a 18w Marshall clone and a '57 tweed Twin reissue....not a high gain amp in the bunch...lol.....but I was amazed at how good that new Peavey signature amp of Joe's sounds. Much closer to the "brown" sound than Eddie ever got once he switched over to the 5150, IMHO.

Cool......old school Gary when he still had Peter Green's guitar. I still haven't heard how much that shop in California paid him for that guitar. Had to be a ton. I saw some lunatic on Ebay who had 2 minty 59's with no artist provenance and he wanted $375k.................EACH!!!!! Billy Gibbons turned down $500k for Pearly 3 or 4 years ago.......It would go for AT LEAST the million that Clapton got for Blackie. I'm just have to be happy with my R9 Historic....lol. I have an R7 with the WCR Moore/Green pickups. That out-of-phase setup sounds kinda funky in the middle position. Suprisingly, I can now nail a perfect G 'n R rythym tone through my 18w clone with that guitar.

Funniest part is that he still dresses in the same lame ass clothes that he did in 1985...LMAO

I'll go against the grain (surprise). I think Malmsteen is a soulless hack. I've never liked anything he's done. Vai was ok doing "stunt guitar" with Zappa, but I'd rather listen to Frank take a lead. And in general:

too many notes

Maybe they were channelling Frank Marino

I'll take the original any day. SRV was OK to...at least he knew how to bend a note. And if I want to listen to lame versions, I'll take this one:

http://nostatic.com/mp3/voodoo3.mp3

At least the fretless bass solo doesn't sound like Jaco...

Saw Satch and EJ a few months ago, too. EJ sucked. He was sloppy, boring, and utterly self-involved. I knew guys in college who played better than he did that night. It was the first time I ever heard EJ play live and it was pretty damn disappointing.

Satch, on the other hand, tore the paint off the walls and got the audience participating. Oh, and even let the bassist solo a bit.

I have seen EJ about 20 times and one or two of those times he had an off night. But the rest he totally crushed. I've seen Yngwie twice and he was excellent both times. Satch and Vai I've seen once and they were great, but I was never really into their stuff to begin with. EJ has been my idol for many years and learning to play his stuff has been one of the biggest challenges ever. I think he's great.

Bien!!!! glad a goodly number of people have finally rediscovered Peter Green in the last 10 years. One of the greatest players and also one of the most tragic stories of the rock era......at least the most tragic that didn't involved a fatal vehicular crash or drug or alcohol overdose. I saw the documentary about his comeback, and even though schizophrenia reduced him to a mere shadow of what he once was, it was still very inspirational to see him relatively healthy and back on stage.

Maybe my tastes or priorities have changed over the last 10 years to where i have grown tired of flashy instrumental metal guitar pyrotechnics, but the best performances I have seen in the last year or so were not Satriani or Johnson. Joe was great, but I wasn't jumpig up and down in the ailsesmaking a fool of my old fat self...lol The best i have seen this year were Derek Trucks and Marc Ford. Props also to Warren Haynes. Saw two great Mule shows, but i will have to say the Derek upstaged him when the Allman Brothers played here. Marc Ford is back with the Crowes and the camera man had the Jumbotron camera on his hands for the better part of the show. It has been a while since i said "how the hell does he do that" but there I was. I don't know that I have ever actually seen a guy bend every note going up the neck for a fast solo run. Probably heard it a few times, but never seen it until now.....lol

I'm in the same boat. Don't get me wrong I still love EJ, Satch, Vai, Petrucci, but I like SRV, Mayer, and Clapton more. There is more to guitar than just playing fast...

Now this may sound strange or even contradictory, but I haqve been disappointed with Clapton for a number of years. I listen to his early stuff and compare it with his more recent work, I feel that he thought that he didn't have to "show off'any more and went for something more "soulful". What we ended up with was something more "poppy" and "boring" What i am saying is don't just play to show off your technical prowess.......anybody ever seen Michael Angelo Batio, if that is his name......and his multi-neck guitars? BLECH!!!!! But show us what ya got in the context of some well written and moderately relevant music. John Mayer started to show us some of that on the first few cuts of his recent live CD. My comment at the Satch/EJ show was that Satch should get a new wardrobe and sign up to be a guitarslinger with some really rockin band that has a great songwriter. He is clearly one of the best in the bidness, but he needs a new canvas on which to paint...the old gig has gotten kind of tired. i honestly think that most guitar players, if they were honest with themselves, would have to admit that they view his shows as less of a musical performance and more of an instructional video from which they can pickup some technical tricks.

true speed isn't everything but when you play as cleanly as they do at speed...well then that is something. That was a great clip.

BTW FWIW my favorite guitarist of all genres combined is John Williams.
