$600 Dell Notebooks
Ok guys since I am now in my first year of college I am looking for a notebook. The notebook has to be either an Inspirion or Latitude with a Pentium M and dvd-RW and 15" screen with built in wireless card. Does anyone prefer the Latitude's over the Inspirion's? My family owns two Latitudes and never had any problems? Why are the Inspirion's so much cheaper?
Sorry guys no Mac's, strictly Dell's

I think the Latitudes are cheaper because they're more business-type laptops - hence no bells and whistles. You might want to consider what you'll be doing with the machine. If word processing, either is fine. More taxing tasks might require a more powerful computer.

Since the navy outsourced our entire computer network and hardware to the lowest, least qualified bidder (I might has well communicate by Carrier Pidgeon), I have the smaller Inspiron 710m that I bought to take on b-trips.
No issues after many bumps and scraps. I purchased the extra memory, RAM, and long dwell battery. Came with wireless, etc. I am on the road as I type.

I think you answered your own question. Why do you think the Inspiron is cheaper? I've had my used Lattitude for over a year and zero problems. I work for the nations largest defense contractor and we use Lattitude with very few problems. They may not have bells and whistles but they work!

Have carried a 600M around the world (am in Africa now) for 3 years now and love it. No problems and have increased the RAM and hard drive several times as my needs expand.
Dell and IBM make a very good laptop, and cannot see any reason to stray.

I've had an Inspiron 500m as my office for 4 years now. I've upgraded the disk drive, and added memory, and it runs without a hitch. Been around the world with it.
My understanding is that Dell has always offered two levels of computer (this includes desktops BTW too). 1) The corporate friendly line which uses standardized components. So for example, One Latitude XXX will have all of the same components as another. This makes it easier when managing larger networks, spare parts, interchangability etc. 2) The cheaper non-corporate line which still uses Dell approved parts, but the configuration may change over time based on market conditions. So while two Inspirons XXX may both have 40-gig hard drives, the drives may have been sourced from two different manufacturers, or may use slightly different firm-ware, etc.
