![]() Looking at this for my late year 2000 build Gateway with 1.1 MHZ processor and 512 mg RAM. Has only USB (1.0?) Will the above work with my system? THX!

You'll need a $30 USB 2.0 card to put in your computer... or a $30 firewire card. The FW card may be more useful, especially if you have a newer camcorder...

Do you have a specific recommendation that you can point me to? Ebay perhaps?
Much appreciated -

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822161632 same size, $130 and a $10 rebate
usb 1.0 is backward compatible with 1.0, it will work but at the slower speed of 1.0. smaller cache, but i think the chokepoint is going to be the usb 1.0, I don't think you'll notice the difference I think this is the same one cheaper http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822161629 $152 plus shiping I built my own with this enclosure, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145125 similar hardrives are much cheaper oem (30 day warranty usually) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822152025 Total about $92 plus shipping and it's ridiculously easy. Check local ads like best buy, hard drives are always on sale with rebates and such.

What OS are you running? Good luck, if you're still running Win98. You need to be running WinXP and USB 2.0 or 1394 (Firewire) to get any kind of reliability/performance out of external hard drives. I use them all the time and prior to WinXP, it was always "hit or miss" if the USB device would be detected.

Any USB device will work with 1.0 - it'll just be slow.

Hey Craig-
I think I have a 250 around, I'll take a look when I get home. Will save you some money over getting one from eBay, and local too, if you're interested. I'll also dig around and see if I have a USB2.0 card as well, I just might.

Craig,
Forget ebay for that kind of stuff. If you shop the weekend circulars you can get comparable for half the price AND a place to return it to should you have a problem with it. I had a client call for an emergency video project 2 weeks ago. All my media drives were full and there was no time to archive so I stopped by Circuit City and picked up 2 250 GB Firewire/USB drives, $280 total. Scott

Well, heck, I have a small form factor 60 that I'm not using. (Uses a laptop sized drive instead of a full size)
And even then, with the USB 2.0/1.0 thing, if you're just doing a backup, you can always just start it and let it run overnight if you're going to fill the whole thing vs. getting a 2.0 card. If you happen to be headed over to Seattle, let me know and you can grab it and try it out.

Mind readers!
I just went out to Circuit City and bought a Seagate 160 gig for $79! So easy to install - added a $20 USB 2.0 card. That was way too easy. Must be something wrong ;-) The copy rate of pictures is about five 1 meg pictures *per second* Wow.

Craig,
I have a 160 gig USB external drive that I use for backups. My older server is a USB 1.0 and laptop is USB 2.0. It works fine with both of these as well as an 4 year old laptop that is one of the first USB applications. You will notice about a 50% speed difference in the 1.0 vs 2.0 but who cares? I start the transfer of data then head to dinner or even do it while you are sleeping. Just let it run and it will backup everything fine. You can put a 2.0 USB card in your desktop and make it run faster but its not mandatory. Joe A
