Thanks! I believe I've seen that one, but it's great to see it again. Jackie wasn't nearly pushing the car as it was on cold tires, but he got some serious wheel spin off 2-3 corners. IOW, he had to drive the car, not point it.
Those days were great racing days. The only problem was not enough video. If it weren't for "Gran Prix" and "Le Mans," we would have never known anything about driving the cars. |

Dang...I've never seen anything like that before. Very cool. Two questions come to mind:
1) What is the purpose of the two sets of front wheels? 2) What kind of powerplant do those things have. They sure sound good. JA

the lump is a good old cosworth DFV. they sing a sweet tune.
got this from wikipedia: The Tyrrell P34 (Project 34) otherwise known as the 'six-wheeler,' was a Formula One race car designed by Derek Gardner, Tyrrell's chief designer, as a response to new regulations due to come into force in 1976. The car used specially manufactured 10-inch diameter wheels and tyres at the front with two ordinary sized wheels at the back. The idea of the smaller front tyres was to increase air penetration and have a smaller 'frontal area' which would reduce drag. However, smaller diameter tyres would have resulted in a loss of contact area between the rubber and the tarmac surface of the track and hence poorer mechanical grip for cornering. To remedy this, the P34 was given four 10-inch front wheels. Because of a complex suspension design, all four front wheels could be steered.

milt there is a video out there called 50yrs of Formula 1 on board. its mental. all them old boys ripping the backside out of the coolest looking single seaters on the planet.....theres a clip where jakie is following another car round the 'ring and they are at it like rabbits- jackie is commenting on the drives and mentions that 170mph slides were commonplace.....them were the days! In the DVD i think jackie stewart talks about the fact that he was loosing on average 3 of his racing buddies a year.....scary stuff. great footage though
