I think CNN mentioned it as "a possibility." CNN also said a merger had been discussed in the past. The reason, supposedly, is to align against Toyota becoming the largest automaker in the U.S.

Mentioned here on Pelican Parts 'Stupid Executives' thread:

Stupid Executives

As I said there, it would be an 'alliance' not a 'merger'. It would have nothing to do with combining sales numbers to be bigger than Toyota. Does it have merit? Probably not, but you will see Ford and GM partner more and more on U.S.-built/assembled components and sub-assemblies.

Alliance or merger - it'll be good for those stupid enough to buy into brand names, or not recognize there are other choices out there.

Of course, nothing is more disarming than choice.

Gawd, I thought for a minute there you were going to say that the Andrea Doria tried to merge with the Swedish America Line.

I'm glad you didn't.

I doubt that FTC regulators would allow it.

I saw on CNN this morning that US automakers support 31 legacy employees for every 11 active employees - adding a cost to the consumer that buys nothing.

I want new car window stickers to start listing that cost for the consumer.

Is "legacy employee" another name for "retiree"? If that's true, then the real problem is that the corporations weren't required to fully fund retirement years ago, and must fund them now. 100% funding should have been mandated long ago.

Who is requiring them to "fully fund" the pensions?

Ford/Chevy. I like it now I can only have 1 brand I wouldn't own instead of the current 2.
I can see it now, "Built Ford tough with Chevy stuff" Great marketing

GM's Hourly Rate Pension Plan EIN 38-0572515, Plan 003 was filed with the Employee Benefits Security Administration, US Dept of Labor as required under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA). A total of 491,727 participate in the plan. The value of plan assets, after subtracting liabilities of the plan, were $63.5 billion as of Sept 30, 2005. This meets ERISA's minimum funding standards.

GM's Salaried program (Same EIN, Plan 002) has 102,089 participating with $12.8 billion as of January 1, 2005. Again, this meets ERISA's standards.

I'm sure you can look it up as it is filed as public record.
