Why do 928 guys hate 911 guys?

Look at this sticker that they're proposing to stick on their 928s.

I never knew there was such animosity from the 928 folks. I don't think you would ever see a "no 928" sticker on a 911. ;)

Have you 911 guys experienced such negative feedback from any 928 guys?

I think it is more of a backlash of SOME 911 owners putting out the "only air cooled rear engine cars are real Porsche's" vibe.

Before you get all defensive on me I have been told "why don't you just push the 944 off a cliff and buy a real Porsche" on an online form.

I was at a gas station when a 911 pulled up, I walked over to admire his car... he acted like I was invisible.

On the GT40 thread someone wrote to another poster "what do you know, you drive a 944" (or something very much like that, not an actual quote).

I'm not saying that all 911 owners are a-holes, the vast majority of 911 owners that post here seem like nice people. It only take a few bad apples to give a group a black eye.

In retrospect I went to the first German autofest (Ventura) and when I tried to pull into the parking lot the guy waived my little 944 beater up onto the grass inside the gates... but then I don't know if he knew anything about Porsche's. ;)

There are several posters here who rant on anything that isn't a "classic" 911. I can understand how some can get a dislike from this. I personaly like just about any car, no matter how bad its owner is.

xlr8 09-23-2006 07:22 AM

I think they are just kidding.

I am a member on Rennlist and saw that post. I think its in really Bad Taste and stupid, but heck its your car and you can stick whatever crap you want on it.

I have driven MANY 32V 928 cars and they never really blew my mind like I thought, maybe a 5pseed car would be a better performer. The 928 guys should be proud of their cars and not get hung-up that the 911 is the most recognized Porsche model, heck the 911 has been in production for what 45years?

The 928 used prices are poor, in fact in a side by side year to comparisson the 928 bring in half or less of what the same year 911 would bring, but it just means that there are great used bargains out there.

I don't get it.

Hey, the 928 was a great luxury GT car. Porsche's mistake was in marketing more than design. They were trying to bump off the Mercedes SL. Obviously, didn't work. Merc people remained loyal, so did 911 people.

P-guys should unite instead of divide. I personaly had a great experience with these cars a few years ago. I like them. A lot.

Year was '89 and I was working as a tech for a very popular shop in Va metro area. We became the place where a lot of high-profile customers came to. One guy in particular and his car was what started me on an admiration of P-cars of all types.

He was a real high-end beeper guy, the real deal, as in dealer. He brought his then new, highly modified 32V-5sp-928 for OZ wheels, sticky street tires and an alignment. I remember this because at the time the wheels alone were over $3500 retail. That kind of scratch was unheard of at the time for wheels.

I go out to the car and start it to bring it in and was amazed at the sound and lumpy idle. first time in a 928. So I rack it dealer guy comes over and we start to 'chat'.

He said that he had a lot of work just completed on the engine. As in: Ported / big valves in cylinder head, high perf cams, ported intake and throttle bodies, stainless headers with custom 3" single exhaust, chip/computer reprogram, etc, etc. Oh.............one last thing. It did have nitrous!!!

I was stunned.....................holy ***** Batman!! Up until that time I had never encountered a highly modified P-car much less a 928.

After finishing I got to drive it..........................un-f#ckin believable. That thing had torque, power and style. I have had a passion for these things ever since. I'm biased

Yes in stark contrast to most cars that appreciate in value every year. Poor stupid 928 owner, will he ever be dissapointed in his "investment"

I like 944's, 911's 914's 928's and all the other cars porsche has made. each has thier own strenghts and weaknesses but I think they are all tops in thier intended catagory.

For me, when I like a car, I like it forl ife, and never realy plan on selling it. The onyl way market value affects me, si if some driver totals it, and in that case, I'd normaly get enough to find a similar car. (providing I don't have huge amounts in upgrades.)

Ohhh, gentlemen, it gets worse. Don't you know Porsche stopped making 911's in 1973??

I thought they stopped making real Porsches in 1964!

For owners into the investment thing, park it in the garage and wash and wax it once a week.

I do think 928's are cool, BTW.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1159451202.jpg

I'd like one this color someday.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1159451244.jpg

But I might have to get another 911 or two first. ;)

AFC-911 - 1965 for general production. I have one of the last 356s - 58 were made after mine. Then in '66, the factory filled a special order for 10 356 cabs for a police outfit (Dutch IIRC).

I like the 944, 928, and all 911 variants.
I have no ill will toward the water cooled cars, and in fact would like to own a well-sorted 928. If they want to be haters, I really could care less.

When I used to ride japanese bikes, the harley crowd snubbed me. Who cares, I just enjoy riding. I did go through a Harley phase for a few years, and am back to riding rice again.

Drive/Ride whatever you enjoy and to hell with other peoples opinions.

red-beard 09-28-2006 06:57 AM

The 944 is/was the most "practical" Porsche. I do love the look of the Shark. It was the Porsche I fell in love with in the early 1980's. I bought my 911 for comfort (Cushy seats and A/C). My driving Porsche is my 914/6.

I would love to find a nicely sorted out 928, as a luxury/comfort/performance vehicle.

}{arlequin 09-28-2006 07:03 AM

well.... it's freakin' rennlist. it should explain most of it. it's not like it's the bastion of online decorum anyways. (have you SEEN their postersize signature pics??? like highschoolers over there....) don't get me started on the 996 crowd... arguing over which clear-bra or faux carbon inserts look better

besides, no one in a 911 would consider "decorating" the car w/ bumper stickers... if they want to look like wankers, let them. :p

kach22i 09-28-2006 07:10 AM

I like the 928, and 928 people are pretty cool. Although at every event they have to remind you that it was the most expensive Porsche of it's day and will often shoot HP figures at you.
