Honda Has Developed Next gen Diesel Engine

"Honda Motor Co. Ltd. announced that it has developed a next-generation diesel engine that reduces exhaust gas emissions to a level that is comparable to a gasoline engine.

The new engine will use a nitrogen oxide (NOx) catalytic converter that will reduce NOx emissions to meet EPA Tier II Bin 5 emissions requirements. It will also use the reductive reaction of ammonia to convert NOx to nitrogen. The two-layer structure of the catalytic converter has one layer to absorb NOx from the exhaust gas and turn a portion of it into ammonia. The other layer absorbs the ammonia and uses it in a reaction to convert the remaining NOx into nitrogen. The converter will be used in Honda’s 2.2 i-CTDi diesel engine.

Honda plans to unveil its new engine in the U.S. within three years."

Keep in mind, to date there is no effective way to reduce NOx in emmission more than 1 or 2%. Reducing particulates and hydrocarbons as well as CO is doable - but NOx to date is not.

Low sulfur diesel comes to the USA in 3-weeks!

http://www.chevron.com/products/prodserv/fuels/diesel/ulsd.shtml
Quote:
When is S15 (ULSD) required to be produced and sold?

Introduction of the new 15ppm diesel into different portions of the diesel fuel supply channel will be managed through staggered compliance dates. For North America, there are currently three S15 (ULSD) implementation timelines.

United States (except California)

On-Highway Diesel Fuel
Refinery < 15ppm by June 1, 2006
Terminal < 15ppm by September 1, 2006
Retail < 15ppm by October 15, 2006
Off-Road / Locomotive & Marine Fuel < 500ppm by June 1, 2007

Kach - it is already being implemented. We have been testing deezel for over 15 years and have witnessed a slow and steady decline in quality (base cetane, contaminants, biologicals). The low sulfur is gonna rip through pumps and injectr tips like a twister though a trailor park.

I strongly doubt that we will see a sudden wave of catastrophic injection pump failures as a result of the switch to ULSD.
I recall reading a document that states that lubricity additives have been added to the ULSD and it actually shows better wear scar numbers than plain old low sulphur diesel.
That said, I'll still be adding ashless 2-stroke oil to my fuel, since the wear scar numbers are still almost twice what Bosch considers acceptable.

Also, it's most convenient that Honda is bringing their diesels over in 3 years.
The lease on my Golf is up in 2 1/2 years. I'll be selling it when the lease is up (hopefully for a profit ) and buying a civic diesel. I'm tired of VW's monopoly on the passenger car diesel market.

Mercedes bluetech diesels are supposed to address NOx, but I'm not sure how.

+1.

I will be so happy to have some choices. Just hope they prove to run ok on vegetable oil.
