Will Lieberman win?

Just saw an article today that said Lieberman is leading Ned Lamont by 10 points in a recent poll and Lamont has only gained 2 points in the last 6 weeks.

The whole Lieberman thing will backfire on the Democrats if he wins. They throw him under the bus, several of his colleagues toe the party line and come out in support of Lamont and then Lieberman wins as an independent? DOH!

Rick, are you sure you have the time line right? I thought they were giving him support, including cameos by Clinton and others, up through the primary. When Lieberman lost the primary, then they threw him under the bus. Of course, maybe I'm not recalling it correctly.

Liberman: if you can't beat 'em, reinvent yourself as an independent.

The man's a usurous political cog.

No...as in he's "using" his political office and American people.

Pardon me if I had a Don King moment with inventive language.

No, you are recalling it correctly. Lamont won the primary on an anti-war platform while Lieberman remained an Iraq supporter. Lieberman announced his intentions to run as an independent hours after the primary results were known. THAT'S when the Democrats threw him under the bus. Several Democrats who said they considered Lieberman "a close friend" came out in support of Lamont's campaign and said Lieberman should withdraw in the interest of the party.

I guess Lieberman gave em the old one finger salute on that one.

Either way, if Lieberman wins, you have a pretty conservative former Democrat occupying that seat instead of a pretty conservative current Democrat. Senate seats are becoming pretty important these days...

Give 'em whine Joe, you mean.

He has tremendous support among Republicans and that may help him beat Lamont.

I've never been able to figure out what the attraction was. He often seems to me to be the Senator from Israel instead of from CT. He doesn't actually get around in CT much -- until this campaign, lots of voters in Connecticut had never seen him in person.

No threw anyone under the bus. Lamont won the primary fair and square, and as such he won the support of the DNC.

The facts that the GOP supports Lieberman ( even monetary support ; I've heard rumors) and that Lieberman is willing to throw his party under the bus by running against its wishes is indicative that we don't want a D next to his name, win or lose.

Ah, now here is an interesting question.

Which is more important? The party or the individual? wludavid seems to think that Lieberman should have withdrawn for the good of the party. I tend to think that if a larger percentage of citizens in Connecticut think that Lieberman should represent them, so be it. A Senator is there to represent ALL his people, not just the Democrat ones and not the people who live outside his state who happen to be Democrat.

Obviously the people of Connecticut have a pretty strong opinion on the matter, who are you to tell them who they should and should not have representing them?

Hope he wins. What the country needs is less extremist talk and more centrist. OTOH maybe it'll convince the D's to actually deal with all issues rather than the tired rallying cries of "no war" and "it's Bush's fault" and they might win some seats.

I'm the first one to complain about the two party system, so if Leiberman wins as in indep., more power to him, and to the residents of CT who want him to represent them. But where were all these people with "strong opinions" on the day of the primary?

My point was that a Dem who has so much support from the GOP is worthy of suspicion. As someone who'd like to see democrats take back control in one or both houses, I'd like dems to retain as many seats as possible. But a dem who might as well be a Repub and is just another administration lapdog is pretty worthless.

I hope he wins since to do so, he'll have to have support from voters in both parties. Which if it isn't f'ing obvious is the very best way to get elected!

A candidate that has any support from either party is worthy of suspicion.

You're right. I meant to say, "worthy of extra suspicion."

Rick:

In response to your question, the individual should trump the party. We could use a viable "third party" made up of rational voters rather than the overly loyal scared-to-death partisans that tow the party line for fear they won't get party funding for re-election.

In my mind, a true patriot is not an individual with unwavering loyalty to one narrow school of thought, but one who considers the needs of the public rather than the agenda of a specific party.

Call me a dreamer.
