I am Dangerously Close to Refinishing the Targa – How to Start…

I have been saving up on the side to give the Targa a paint job. I took it to a place about ½ mile from where I live and the owner quoted me $3800 to redo it – includes blasting down to metal, sanding out any rust, filling with metal not bondo, priming and painting. I have to bring it in tailored down - no windows or trim. Hay, with a lil help from a few local pals, no problem! I'll drop the engine as well. Tranny too?

So, does it sound fair? The guy has been around for many years and I have seen his work. From muscle cars to recently a Pantera – all look really good. I suppose I should check it out even further. Any pointers?

$3800!!! Hell, I'm kill that molestor SOB for that kind of cash, you just say the wo......oh......wrong post. Carry on. :D

JMPRO's fglass top saved me from what I'm sure would have been hours of cursing that damn vinyl.

Too bad you're not closer to the boarder. The shop I like in Tijuana charged $3000 - Full glass out paint job, re-do the entire interior in leather, fix rust spots by cutting out and welding in new metal, sand to bare metal.

sounds like a bargain at that price

just make sure that whoever made the quote, knows what he's doing
check his other work before you commit

That seems like a good deal, as long as the paint job is done right. You'll know when the prep work is done, as that is the "key" to getting the paint to look it's best.

Good deal, take it.

What brand of materials will they use? This is at least as important as his abilities

it's Lube we're talking here, i'm pretty sure he went for the custom 2tone paint, Candyapple green / Orange, with the pinstripe flames in you're bog standard pimp-pink... g g g G-Lube-it !

M.D. Holloway 09-29-2006 07:58 AM

Stijn - if it was up to our Son the car would have bright orange flames coming from the sides!

No no, I shall keep her Grand Prix white and also look to get a fiberglass targa roof as well and get it painted white (as soon as Ronin gets back in touch with me). The targa bar will also be white as well as the Fuchs.

That's no 914...you'd better keep the old foldable top in the trunk in case of emergancy...

I'm thinking of doing the same to my Targa after I move up to D/FW. Do it, I need a guinea pig :p

M.D. Holloway 09-29-2006 08:05 AM

Good Point. I'm gonna take all the insides out as well (except for the dash). I want to pull the engine to have them do the well but should I also pull the tranny out?

If your up here in Dec/Jan you can belly up a chair, crack a beer and watch as the thing gets ripped down and engine pulled.

Nathans_Dad 09-29-2006 08:58 AM

Hey sweet. I will be up there for a couple weeks around Christmas and then maybe again in Jan/Feb for some early house hunting...

Rick,
Check out Highland Village. It has been ranked the top suberb to live in in all of North Tejas. Ed Hughes and I live in Highland Village. It is a great town and the homes are nice, new and right now affordable compared to the nice parts of Plano or Dallas.

North Tejas? We call that Baja Oklahoma.

My targa with the JMPRO top fits behind the front seats. It's a tight squeeze and you lose the cargo shelf capacity but it works.

IME, double the estimate and tripple the time estimated to complete the job.

M.D. Holloway 09-29-2006 10:09 AM

Blue - did you use the frame from your top or get a used one? I'm looking into a used frame with a ***** vinyl that I can use. Is that a good idea or should I just use the original one?
