bring in the braintrust
Soliciting opinion on the following.
a quick update- recently started a new private sector job i have found less than desirable, this after leaving a public job i was reaching 10 years at. i was not enthralled with the public gig i left let the record reflect, so looking to be reinstated is not an option. jump ahead four months- i am currently interviewing with a very local public agency (my last gig was 40 miles each way). having made it through the 1st round of interviews i have scheduled an interview time slot i can not make without jeopardizing my current job. i was able to get the time off early last week to attend the 1st board of guest interviewers from other public agencies and a member of the public. this second interview is with city staff, that in theory should be a more flexible board and have the ability to assemble much more effectively on a whim. maybe not on a "whim", but you get my point so this is wherest i lay. i am considering calling the HR lady tomorrow and telling her i cant make the 930 without compromising my current gig, that an 830 would be my only option, unless they wanted to reschedule later in the week. the boards start at 9am tuesday so my current 930 is the 2 slot. here's the pelican tie in:: if they want to see me fridee i will be a sears point with track masters turnin' laps... actually any time off next week will be tough. the 830 works because i have a must attend meeting at 10 some 20 miles from the interview local, away from my office and could camouflage that sufficiently to have that fly. my credential are sound for the position, should i let them speak for themselves? i figure if they REALLY want to see me maybe they show that by getting a bit flexible. public agencies are not know for their flex so this a dice roll to say the least. if they flex that also shows their card's in that they find me attractive enough to see me on my terms, like an ugly chick might.. what say yee? T$

As a general rule of thumb, don't push your luck too far with the interview for the job you want. You can ask politely - "I have a meeting with my current employer, is an 8:30 spot at all possible?" - but be clear you are happy accept the spot you have.
Then Tues AM you are calling in sick. Your voice sounds a little rough already. Call your boss's VM at 7AM, tell him you'll check back in with him in the late afternoon. It wouldn't hurt to mention on the way out the door that you are feeling a little tired, gonna go home and jump into bed. Liar Liar Pants on Fire!

two very weighty opinions to lead off! donni-plum and shang-hi-sanco, that's royality stepin' up quick like.
cliff, thing is i jumped at the exact wrong time apparently. the previous prez left about 3 weeks before i started, a great guy from what i hear. since then there are a whole passel of VP's filling in and trying to show they have what it takes to move up to the big office. that being said people say the last 3 months have been their worst with the company. if not for "premature", my timing would stink ALL the time. Ask yourself this question---"Do I REALLY want the job?" If your answer is YES, then you need to be there at the original interview time, period.
You never want to start off with a potential negative, no matter what. If you are not sure if you want the job than it doesn't really matter what you do. That's how I see it. |

Cliff, Don, and Jon are on point.
You're going to be sick, my friend. Food poisoning - its a good 24 hour ailment. you hurl all night, can't make it in. Do the interview.

Call in sick ONLY IF it won't affect your current position.

Why not just give notice at you current job you are not enjoying and tell them you are interviewing. Keep your appointment and be honest.
Come back to work after your interview and think about Sears the rest of the week. KT

Tell them you've got a counter offer from Pelican so they better hire you immediately...screw the interview.

I'll agree with Wayne on this. Tell the "new" company that you have a commitment to your current employer that you cannot break without causing problems for them. Do explain to them the seriousness of missing the meeting briefly to them so they understand. They ought to respect that. It will speak well of you as a future employee for them.
Give them a handful of alternative times. If they want you they will accomodate. If they push back, get clarification on why they cannot accomodate (need to meet a hire date, etc..) and make your decision. I would speak to your future boss about this rather than a schedulign secretary.

so it ends up like this. still not having decided on what exactly i would do i get a call at my office this morning about 930, its the HR lady. i nearly shat myself because if she wants to talk in the least i have cubicals of ears all around me. she asks if she was correct in recalling i was the guy looking for the earliest interview... i say yes, and she asks if i would be willing to change my time to 9AM, FOOLS gold i say to myself and tell her thats great.
so long story short i can make the 9 AM interview, and prolly get to my 10 am meet just a few minutes late. so i am sooo pissed that the pg&e guy left my gate ajar allowing my dog to be getting out in the morning tomorrow. that's why i cant arrive at my office at my normal 730 start and will have to go directly to my 10 after "looking for the dog" for an hour or so tomorrow morning. thing is with traffic heading from the office to the 10 am meeting local i would have to leave the office after being there like 45 minutes to make it accross the bay in the commute direction. maybe me trying to be more like earl (a better person) things are paying off. thanks for the input and i will let you guys know if i get it. i would not know what to do with a 4 or 5 mile commute. ive been going 40 each way from going on 13 years... Good Luck, I hope everything works out for you. I drove my company truck to my last interview, told them not to contact my employer unless they were sure they were going to hire me. The next day the owner of the company showed up to my job-site & asked me "Is there something you'd like to tell me?", I replied "no, why?" He tells me that the city called for a reference & I asked him when I could quit. He let me go 4 days later so he wouldn't have to pay me for the Thanksgiving weekend.
Now I'm set, no more interviews, put in my 30 years & retire.

The potential employer knows they are trying to stealing you from another, so be honest with them. Take Wayne's advice. The HR lady will know where you stand in the hiring process, so if she feels that it's a waste of time to reschedule...then you'll know it. If they reschedule, you'll know your chances are good.
