Two Wands—Race, “Racism” And Culture In America

Quote:
Two Wands—Race, “Racism” And Culture In America

Peter Brimelow writes: Richard D. Lamm, the former Democratic Governor of Colorado, now Co-Director of the University of Denver’s Institute for Public Policy Studies, is one of the most interesting figures in the immigration reform movement. His recent book, Two Wands, One Nation: An Essay on Race And Community in America, is an expanded version of a response that he wrote to an article in a UD school paper The Source by Jesus Trevino, who is something called “Associate Vice Provost of Multicultural Excellence” in UD’s Center for Multicultural Excellence.

Lamm describes Trevino’s article as

Quote:
“hysterical…finding white America guilty of ‘prejudice, racism, and systemic racial oppression’…He claims that whites as a group ‘perpetuate racism in conscious or unconscious ways’ and that examples of white racism at work can be found in high poverty rates among American Indians, the lack of minority professors at a university level, large percentages of minorities in janitorial and landscaping positions, and the high school drop-out rates of minorities. He urges more emphasis be place on ‘systematic racial oppression’ of minorities by whites: ‘This definition moves away from individual behavior and focuses on large-scale patterns of group discrimination.’”
(This definition also, of course, removes from the accuser any obligation to provide proof).

The University of Denver refused to publish Lamm’s response to Trevino on the extraordinary grounds that it was “too controversial”. And, all too significantly, Jesus Trevino denied Lamm permission to reprint the original article in Two Wands.

Lamm’s argument is staggeringly moderate by VDARE.COM standards. He focuses exclusively on the cultural disabilities of minorities and explicitly denies the unpleasant possibility that deeper factors may be at work. His experience is further evidence that American universities are becoming bastions of totalitarianism. If it was up to Jesus Trevino (we decline to use the “ñ” he is apparently attempting to impose on the English language) VDARE.COM would be closed and we would all be in the gulag. [send him mail] [Send UD Chancellor Robert Coombe email]

We post here Lamm’s original column.

Dick Lamm is spot on. My wife and her family (1st gen Chinese immigrants) have all integrated into society and have done great. Our son busted his tail in school. His hard work has payed off and now he's a doctor. I see this with all our Chinese American firends, too. Culture is what's holding back some of these minority groups, and I for one do not care to coddle them in hopes that somehow it'll help them succeed. They have got to earn their own way in this world.

Jim, I've got a similar situation since my wife's parents were born in China too.

So tell me, what box did you check for your kid(s) on the census forms?

Race? There's no race until next weekend I think. I bet Schumacher hands Alonzo's ass to him again. . .

Oh wait. . .

paste,

why not just write a book of your own, sumamrizing ALL of your views into one handy tome? That way you can spare the OT board your multiple posts which are merely cut-n-pastes of others' thoughts and opinions, followed by an original line of your own which often translates to "I agree".

My guess is:
1. you have no original opinions/thoughts to offer
2. you are not nearly as interesting as you think and nobody would read such a book

It certainly is on the census form, as are all the questions beyond how many of voting age live in your home.

Race may play a part in success, asians have an IQ average of 110, ten points higher than whites. No one knows why, and of course research into the subject is considered politically incorrect.

Absolutely and totally ridiculous, so at least you are consistant.

Now I don't live in the south but I can say that for the most part whites in so cal are much less prone to racism that the so called minorities are. I say that because whites are actually the minority now here.
Whites in business generally bend over backwards to be politically correct, they go overboard trying to prevent any kind of racism and in the process they actually give preferential treatment to "members of a protected group" using the government's description.

On the other hand, it's OK for a black man to refer to me as cracker. If a white male refered to him using the N word he'd be fired or put in jail for a hate crime. It's perfectly acceptable for a black man to hate a white man because the white man has held him down and prevented him from getting rich. (BS). The victim and race card is basically a get out of jail free card when used right.
I see much more racism from the minorities that the whites but that's OK, it's not popular to talk about that. It's much more socially acceptable to stand up for these poor people than to actually point out that some of them are more guilty of the things they complain about that the whites they accuse.

While i do not disagree with Lamm's analysis, I believe that it is up to the individual's character. Being part of a family or social-economic group that fosters certian characteristics do help but ultimately it is up to you. There are successful Hispanics and Blacks like there are unsuccessful Asians and Whites...and believe me there are *plenty* of dumb Asians too.

Some people fight to overcome adversities, others whine and complain. It is easy to pick out who comes out ahead in the end.

At the end of the day, the true measure of success is Happiness. A janitor or landscaper might be happier than the professor or lawyer she works for. But that is another topic.

Same here. I use the box marked "other" and then fill in the line saying "Human".

That's all that matters.

Nothing Lamm, or I, said indicates that there aren't geniuses in any race, that'd be factually incorrect. What Lamm is saying, and I agree, is that in the majority of the hispanic population, there is a cultural bias against education and going into mainstream success.

We're not talking anecdotal examples, we're talking about whole cultural groups.

Yep, human is the best response.
