Marine: Gitmo guards bragged of beatings

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - Guards at Guantanamo Bay bragged about beating detainees and described it as common practice, a Marine sergeant said in a sworn statement obtained by The Associated Press. The two-page statement was sent Wednesday to the Inspector General at the Department of Defense by a high-ranking Marine Corps defense lawyer. The lawyer sent the statement on behalf of a paralegal who said men she met on Sept. 23 at a bar on the base identified themselves to her as guards. The woman, whose name was blacked out, said she spent about an hour talking with them. No one was in uniform, she said. A 19-year-old sailor referred to only as Bo "told the other guards and me about him beating different detainees being held in the prison," the statement said. "One such story Bo told involved him taking a detainee by the head and hitting the detainee's head into the cell door. Bo said that his actions were known by others," but that he was never punished, the statement said. The paralegal was identified in the affidavit as a sergeant working on an unidentified Guantanamo-related case. The statement was provided to the AP on Thursday night by Lt. Col. Colby Vokey. He is the Marine Corps' defense coordinator for the western United States and based at Camp Pendleton. |

On November 1, 1994, The Alberta Court of Appeal increased the sentence given Terry Keizer, a male nurse convicted of sexually assaulting a comatose patient in the intensive care unit. The 27-year-old woman was admitted to the intensive care unit of an Edmonton hospital after an unsuccessful suicide attempt. She was unconscious, naked, with her arms and legs in restraint, and breathing with a ventilator when Keizer sexually assaulted her. He pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault, but the prosecutor appealed the sentence when he was given only 18 months and the original trial judge said that the short sentence was partly because the woman's unconscious state was "favorable" to the accused. The appeals court increased the sentence from 18 to 30 months, finding that the use of the position as a professional caregiver was problematic and that the oiffence was "a serious interference with teh sexual integrity of respondent." Meanwhile, in Florida, 45 year old Bruce Alan Young, another male nurse, has pleaded innocent and is waiting to stand trial for charges resulting from having sex with patients. He was arrested in October after another nurse allegedly caught him in the act of having sex with a 15-ear-old girl who was still under anesthesia in the recovery room of Citrus Memorial Hospital. Since that time, he has been charged with rape of four other women. In 1991, Young was required by Florida Board of Nursing to undergo psychological testing for sexual deviancy before being licensed because of allegations that he had had sex with a 19-year-old high school student who was his driver's ed student. Young was licensed as nurse after passsing the test. In his hearing pefore the nursing board, young pleaded, "I will be a good nurse if you give me a chance." He asked for a chance to prove himself, and he got it.
