Crystal Cove Yesterday

For those who aren't familiar, Crystal Cove is an area in Orange County, California, where $4M homes are the norm. Add to this setting a new shopping center with bakery and a Starbucks, and all of the nice cars spontaneously started coming down out of the hills about three years ago. What started as an unplanned, unscripted event has grown a little out of control acording to some of the locals in the area, and now it has one last Saturday before it gets shut down. But what a spectacle it is/was. So I gassed up the Targa and headed for the beach - my, what great freeways we have here in California when you can drive at 85 all the way in your old 911 - so long as the sun has not risen and it's a Saturday!

Once you hit PCH, you drive through the little seaside community of Corona Del Mar:

The old Port Theater

A couple of more miles down on your left just before Laguna Beach is the Crystal Cove Promenade:

As I pull into the parking lot, I know I'm in the right place as an Enzo Ferarri drives by me (befoe I could grab my camera) and then this trowback to the 60's:

The 57 sounded awesome with its headers and loaping cam - and what's great about the event is how a guy with a muscle car can share the stage with an Enzo - something I don't see very often in So Cal.

This was cool but didn't sound as good as the 57:

Once you find a place to park (not an easy task) the sounds and smells of the mechanical world begin to greet you.

Real or replica - I'll let you decide. Regardless, it was executed excellently!

The Brits were well represented:

Lots of Lotus's (sp?)

The American's had nothing to be ashamed of:

Sorry to tease - lots more later - gotta scoot for a little bit of Sunday Morning obligations!

So, was this the last weekend or is next weekend the last?
We come over to Laguna a few times a year and Sat. morning at Crystal Cove is a mandatory part of each trip! I can't believe they would shut it down, this sucks.

The old and the new from Germany:

This car just did not seem to be real. It appeared to have never been driven - it was immaculate. Did the factory actualy make a 3.8 CSI?

Can someone tell me what these are on the headlights - they didn't look like wipers???

A BMW of another stripe...

More to follow!

They have a Starbucks in the plaza but it looks like the new place will be nice just no ocean view from Irvine and much closer to me as well. Great pictures BTW.

Those sure look like headlight wipers to me(?)

Great pics, and you are correct that BMW did not sell a 3.8 coupe.

I don't know about the 3.8 CSI - I was hoping someone would chime in here with the answer.

More of the 57 Chevy - what a time capsule for the So Cal scene from the 60's:

I Love those Hooker Headers!

I hear this has beat quite a few bikes...

The Italians were also there...

International relations...

Maybe not the prettist, but cool nonetheless...

Not your Daddy's station Wagon...

My favorite participant - anyone know anything about it?

The drive home...

He actually drove it to and fro - amazing!

A 70 T carburated and a loud and fast 356 - note the "special" plate (356 R)...

One more Saturday remains at Crystal Cove. Hopefully the new location will attract the same eclectic participants as The Promenade. Check it out if you can!

I could probably find something similar here, but it would be jacked up pick-em-up trucks, primered 80's camaros and new mustangs.

I've always either been at the wrong place at the wrong time or ignorant to the fact that I was in the right place until it was too late.

You could sell that Alfa and buy yourself a couple of those CGTs.

Can any BMW fans give an opinion on the 3.8 CSI?

I was riding in a charity bike race down PCH on Saturday. The 356R and a gaggle of other classic Porsches passed going the other way, pretty much almost crashed my bicycle trying to look!

Farther down PCH 6 Cayman Ss passed us which was another moment of no bicycle control.

The new venue sounds like it will work well with plenty of parking nearby. Does the event take place year round?
