Torre...Yankees...bye-bye?

Well, will it happen? Say it ain't so, Joe. They should get rid of Rodriguez instead. What a post season splat that guy has been.

yeah die hard fan here. I don't think A-Rod. is a bad player, but new york isn't for him. He just never fit in. We need to sell him and buy more people for the bullpen. That I think is the weakest point of the team. Firing Torre won't fix the problem. I like Torre a lot he is a great manager. I hope he will be around next year.

Yeah, I like Torre (sorry about misspelling). But you know, if there is a hell, Steinbrenner would get Lasorda for eternity.

Gay Rods not the problem...the whole team's structure is.
The GM, appropriately named "Cashman" is simply a puppet for "the Boss" who has spent over 1Billion$ since the last world series win in 2000 with nothing to show for it.

I have no sympathy for those who learn the hard way that you cant buy chemistry and you cant buy Pitching (it has to be farmed for the most part). They could fire them all (probably will except Jeter)...and it wouldnt matter.

Go Tigers.

Even though Torre is a class act, it's probably time to move on. They can't find him a cohesive group of "rich jocks", so for the last 6 years he's had to answer the same questions at the end of the season.

Daily News is reporting that Torre will be fired and replaced by Lou Pinella.

I don't understand this move. Who has a better track record than Joe Torre with the Yankees? Sure, they haven't won the big one in 7 years now, but 9 straight division titles should be enough to keep him his job, non?

From what I hear, A-Rod has become a major distraction in the clubhouse, and the Jeter-Giambi contigent wants him gone.

I respect Torre. And as a lifelong diehard Red Sox fan, that's saying a lot. I (by default) have been required to despise him as skipper of the Evil Empire, but I do respect the guy - he's classy, unassuming, not an egotist (like so many of his players) and given the tools, he does get the job done.

It'd be sweet, sweet justice to see him end up in Boston, but I like Francona too much.

Anyone else hear the rumors of A-Rod possibly going to Anaheim? Personally I don't think he's worth it (supposedly four pitchers and cash in a trade) but interesting rumor nonetheless. . .

That would be way good for the pinstripes, as pitching is what they need most.

A Rod is a good player, just apparently not up to responding to the pressure (ie he likes the situation where he can be a good player on a bad team)

Yea, A-Rod stock is down. I always did feel the guy was overrated and after his "cheapo" move in the 2004 ALCS against the Red Sox (earning him the nickname "Slappy McBlue Lips" in RSN circles. . .) I felt the hype far exceeded his abilities. If he were as good as the hype would lead one to believe, he shouldn't have to resort to such nonsense.

I agree though - he's got "Kobe Bryant Syndrome". He'd rather be the big fish in a small pond than an above-average-sized fish with a bunch of other above-average-sized fish in a huge pond.

Ego, ego, ego. . .

I think the Yanks would've been better off with the team they had mid-season, than the old-injured-no hearters that thye trotted out there against Detroit. Sheffield, Matsui, A-Rod, Mussina, Big Bird, and Jared Wright all gotta go. None of them, barring Matsui have any heart, and thats what it takes to win the World Series.

Whats the difference between A-Rod and Derek Jeter?

A-Rod wants to be the best player, and Jeter wants to win.

"I am deeply disappointed at our being eliminated so early in the playoffs," Steinbrenner said in a statement issued Sunday by spokesman Howard Rubenstein. "This result is absolutely not acceptable to me nor to our great and loyal Yankee fans. I want to congratulate the Detroit Tigers organization and wish them well. Rest assured, we will go back to work immediately and try to right this sad failure and provide a championship for the Yankees, as is our goal every year."

No offense to Yankees fans, or others, but I believe this is the problem with Steinbrenner. You can't win the world series every year. Though it might be a yearly 'goal' it is simply not going to happen, so stop whining.

IMO...11 years, six AL pennants, and four World Series titles, but no world championships in the past six years is nothing to get fired over.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Joe Torre will remain as manager of the New York Yankees, finally getting the word from owner George Steinbrenner after the team's surprise elimination from the playoffs last weekend.

Torre spoke with Steinbrenner on the telephone Tuesday, shortly before he walked into the interview room at Yankee Stadium and made the announcement.

"He gave me his support," Torre said. "I'm just pleased I'm able to stay on and do this."

The two also spoke on Monday.

"I talked to George yesterday for probably 15, 20 minutes, and we discussed a lot of things: the team, what we do from here and things like that," Torre said.

With 1,973 regular-season wins, Torre is 10th on the career list and third among active managers behind Tony La Russa of the St. Louis Cardinals (2,297) and Bobby Cox (2,171) of the Atlanta Braves.

Torre has the longest uninterrupted term for a Yankees manager since Casey Stengel held the job for 12 years from 1949-60. Under Torre, the Yankees have gone 1,079-699. He trails only Joe McCarthy (1,460) and Stengel (1,149) for victories among Yankees managers.

I can't understand why firing Joe Torre would even be considered. This year the Yankees had the best record in baseball, the best team batting average and the most runs scored. The Division Series is a short series and subject to streaks...winning or losing..by any team or players. It just happened that way and, IMO, is a good reason to find a way around a 'Wild Card' team which has no right to be there.

Dumb move to fire Torre. Hey did you hear the latest? Joe Torre as Manager of the Cubbies! Somebody needs to whip them into shape. Then, on the other hand, working for the Tribune Co. might be as bad as working for Steinbrenner.....

Seeing the looks on the Yankees' faces in the dugout after getting summarily shellac'd by Boston after being up three games to one was one of the most emjoyable moments in all my years as a sports fan. Does this help outline my perspective on the New York Hankees?

That's one of my favorites. Needless to say I have the entire 2004 Divisional, ALCS and W/S on tape for future generations.

I also have the 2000 W/S - the tape is actually worn out in the spot where Mariano Rivera chokes in Game #7. Just seeing the look of panic on his face as the game (and series) crumbles with him on the mound brings me joy whenever I'm feeling blue. . .
