I guess us liberals just don't listen to political talk radio that much.

The reason it failed (so spectacularly) is because they were business idiots and didn't understand that you need a product to sell to stations, not stations to sell your product.

As they say in media content, content, content......and their content was awful.

len...The conservative side of the political equation seems to be far better heeled than the other. This is generally proven out in fund raising analyses and it is not too much of a stretch to assume that this extends to the underwriting of conservative talk show hosts as well. Follow the money.

Why this is so, I am not certain. But it is interesting. I would also posit that conservatives are better organized and have a more advanced business sense.

Bob, there is no underwriting of Conservative talk show hosts. Either they have a good product or they don't. AAR was the only one that thought the product need not prove itself(not so surprisingly egotistical).

len...There is ALWAYS underwriting of anything that requires funding, whether it comes from private donations or corporate sponsors.

I do enjoy our exchanges. They are, for the most part, civil and respectful.

With all due respect Bob, no they don't. Limbaugh was a little nothing at a small station and grew into syndication. None of these guys were given a bankroll to start an enterprise. In other words there is no "conservative network", only conservative talent that markets themselves to independent stations.

Without them, Rush and the rest would collapse and disappear. ALL businesses, in order to survive, must turn a profit and the sponsors supply that capital. Thus is the world of business.

Someone sees a potential product, and decides to market it. Rush was a product, and someone saw the potential.

Sponsors cannot be called underwriting in the sense that AAR was underwritten. Sponsors are sales, that is the entire point of the product. Limbaugh did not get sponsors to help him further his career, he created an audience and sold a product to sponsors.

AAR got people to flat out invest in them even though they had NO product.

Calling advertisers underwriting is just incorrect. A program exists to generate advertising dollars. Every program has this goal. If Air America cannot generate advertising dollars, then they fail. PBS is the only broadcasting company (that I know of) that receives specific government dollars.

Show me where any conservative radio talk show is supported by the Republican party with dollars. It isn't there.

Maybe people just didn't want to listen to Janine Garofalo screech all day long.

When I was working at the RNC, the vast majority of the party's money came in checks of $25 or less and at that same time the vast majority of Dems' money came in checks of over $1000. We still outfundraised them every day of the week because the RNC had a huge network of grassroots, low-dollar supporters who would write a few checks per year. The Dems didn't have that at all and that's one of the reasons Terry McAuliffe took over. He was a direct mail pro. Now it's a little more evened out beause of him, but also because of 527's (I forget the right digits). Anyway, that whole thing about Republicans being richer is a myth. They just have more passion among the rank and file.

As for advertising, if you can't survive in the free market, you should be out of business. Rush's audience numbers dwarf those of most other radio talk shows combined, which is why his stations get the advertisers. Air America, much like Mario Cuomo's old radio show, just doesn' have much appeal.

Listened to them once, that was more than enough as they started talking about things they had no clue about.

I think I listened to Rush three times, not by choice but because he was on in the break room. Same comment applies to him. I would tune him out thereafter.
