The Way We Are Now IX

Alas! it is delusion all;
The future cheats us from afar,
Nor can we be what we recall,
Nor dare we think on what we are.
—Lord Byron

Several writebackers on this website have taken to task Dr. Paul Craig Roberts for his blistering columns on the transgressions of President Littlebush and his neocon handlers.

In particular they have objected to likening of the Neocons to Nazis as exaggerated and counterproductive. It strikes me that, if one looks at early Nazism and at the historical record of the incremental nature of tyranny, Roberts’s point is apt and his vehement tone useful in waking up the complacent. We know that bad men have their way when good men remain unmotivated. Read the rest of this superb article

"Professor Emeritus of History, University of South Carolina writes."

Because Fastpat has no original ideas and can only parrot what he reads on from his pre cut and paste mailing list

If you study the events leading up to the "nazification" of Germany, there are many similarities to the current situation. One primary difference is the relatively healthy economy we currently have. Some of the similarities include an atmosphere of fear, mistrust of "outsiders", enemies, both internal and external, the demonizing of some social/ethnic/religious group, and the erosion of individual freedoms in the name of security.

This in no way says the results will be the same because at least we have presidential term limits.

The Patriot Act was in fact a laundry list of things the FBI's wanted for decades, since "Scoop" Jackson's reduction of their illegal activities.

In one sense, there is no "term limits", when government has been given powers that span presidential term limits, there's very little change in attitudes or methods. It's the bad side of Civil Service, which probably should apply in a much more limited way to the questionably legal federal police forces.

There is no federal police power within the Constitution.
