Pelican blocked at office

Hey Guys,

There is a good chance my web access will get the uber filter next week here in the office and may loose my pelican fix during the day. Last time we lost web mail, not sure what they have planned this time.

Anyone know a good work around?

Do they allow any chat programs, like AIM? If so then look for a proxy or put up a proxy on port 5190. If not then you may be able to find a public proxy on port 80 or 3128 or 8080 or something like that. That's worked for me in the past.

bribe the IT geek with something...

realistically , if i were the geek, i can assure you that would be the only way to get something extra...

i'm no longer in that specific area of work
but in the old days , i ruled

No AIM allowed already. Access is controlled out of corp office, so no luck with the local guys.

Don't know what I could get with a wireless card. Laptop is locked up enough, may have to get IT involved just to install it. Plus living out here in the boonies, access charges would probably cost a bundle.

no, they are not. And I prefer to keep it that way!

They've done several things for me they shouldn't have...added MAC addresses to the allowed list, etc, for our wireless systems.

Find a new job? Just kidding (kind of..)...like mas said try and find a public proxy (search google for "public proxy list").

Or talk to your boss about how you need for Pelican fix at least 4 times a day during the work day to maintain a steady level of productivity!

a public proxy is usually no good, as they tend to be blacklisted as well ( they would be if i did the lockdown )

better would be a private proxy , if you know an it savy geek with a server of his own... then that server could be your relay...
if he's running low profile, and you don't cause to much traffic, it might work...

true, but not as a permanent solution, it can still be identified , and ultimately blocked

in a true locked enviroment, the admin would use a complete seperation of internet and intranet

an a proxyserver would be required for regular internet access

SSH won't tunnel through a proxserver
and it won't make hole in a firewall , if there are none to begin with...

in such and enviroment you'de need a http web proxy
such as http://www.the-cloak.com/anonymous-surfing-home.html

but that one would be known to the blacklists...
hence why i would say you need a similar thing that isn't all to known...

as soon as as webproxy get's popular , it will be blacklisted

Is that something I could set up and use on my home system for my own private use? Running on a cable connection at the house.

Yes, exactly as we used to do at a previous job

Don't worry, I know the feeling. I can't surf Pelican anymore at the office because of the immense IT rules so my post count has dropped significantly as I have been here once or twice this week where before it was 3 -5 times a day.

I run a private proxy server for this very purpose. So drop me a PM and I'll send you the URL. I've never had any trouble accessing any material from within the corporate firewall. I laugh at firewalls. However, I did make sure to disable the encryption functionality because I did not want to be responsible for anyone losing sensitive data just in case I f*cked it up. So you can't use it to do online banking or log on to an encrypted online service (like AOL). But aside from that, it makes the internet wide open to you.

i'm sure that it works like that

but i deal with enviroments where there is no route from internal to external

not a single port routes

i'm talking tripple firewalled enviroments... big banks and gouvernemental setups... to get to a webpage, you contact a HTTP proxy server locally , and that one then processes your request, checks, filters, caches and logs...

for one thing, if there is no route, then you cannot tunnel

for another thing, any type of creativity in those enviroments, get's you fired and prosecuted...

you may laugh at your corporate firewall
but nobody laughs at the ones i see @ some of my customers sites...
