you're going to win that bet, depending on how far back "a few years" goes.

Was definately in the past 6 or 7 years, maybe less.

Here's one chart. Was definately .99 cents at Costco (and others) for much of '98 and '99.

Also looks to have had a very short drop in early 2002.

But I think 98/99 is the time period you are remembering.

You can paypal me my half when you collect!

Summer of '98, I paid $.99/gal to fill my Civic at the gas station on Naval Operations Base, Norfolk. That's definitely the most recently I can remember sub-dollar prices.

Yep, I definately remember under $1 gas too in '98. I remember because I was working a regular job and commuting a fair distance. As I recall, it got down to .95 cents at the Arco station right next to where I worked.

Just for giggles: I'm not THAT old - 51 and I SOLD Chevron gas(under the Sears name at their gas island) for 29.9 during a "gas war" when I was 16 years old. That was in 1971...oh wait....I guess I AM that old!

Didn't hurt then but it left a scar making it very difficult to pay more than that per gallon at any one given time.
