Halloween Candy?

When I was a candy-grabbin munchkin (early 1980's) I would dream of those houses that bypassed the "one bubble gum ball in a cellophane pack" and the ubiquitous tiny Tootsie Roll-ito for the king of Halloween candy --- the Reeses Peanut Butter Cup.

Now I am a grown adult with my own house and my own neighborhood kids panhandling for sweets tonight.

It is no hardship for me to give the ever-dwindling number of trickotreeters what I only dreampt of as a child, the _PEANUT BUTTER CUP_.

I wonder if they have the same candy-hopes that I had twenty five years ago?

Will I go to He#% and/or suffer litigation if I give America's Children peanut tainted candy? Tonight I'm asking the incoming parents (if present) if peanuts are OK. Everyone gets the puny Tootsie things and Pop Rocks but only those with Parental Approval get the cups.

While there's an upside to this - every cup that doesn't get out tonight goes in my freezer for my eventual consumption, I'm still bummed. Am I paranoid? Are today's children going to miss out on the mighty Peanut Butter Cup? Did I really say "taint" earlier in this post?

I think I'm paranoid...

Neccos!

Yessssssss!

For me, only the licorice ones - never the banana or chocolate crap.

Can you believe they've made those nasty chocolate ones for over 100 years? The licorice ones, yes, but the chocolate - the crunchy candy chocolate ones? Oohh the Humanity!!!!!

Great!
I don't think anyone in my entire county sells Neccos. Now I want Neccos!.

BTW nobody's turned down the peanut butter cups. I may have been paranoid.

+1

What does it say about us that we like a candy that has been around for a 100 years?

I still eat Necco wafers every month. You should notice they taste just like valentine conversation hearts...

licorice all the way.
best thing about the wrong flavored necco wafers was how well they shattered with a bb gun hit.

There was an article in the local paper about Halloween candy and it's ranking. Snickers and Reeses are tops, with hard candies, Dum Dum's and those generic orange and blacked wrapped mystery candies coming in last. Me? I raided the 100 Grand bars from my kids loot as the 'daddy tax' for taking them out

Yes, the Peanut Butter Cup was the holy grail of halloween candy as far as I was concerned. I still steal them from my own kids' halloween bags.

Slightly off-topic, when my dad was returning from Europe on a troop ship in WWII, he managed to get his hands on a case of Reese's and ate the whole damn thing. Sixty-plus years later, he still can't stand the sight of a peanut butter cup.

My least favorite was that one house with the grumpy mom "against" candy. My grandmas's neighborhood: "WE. DONT. BELIEVE. IN. CANDY." ...and in my neighborhood: Giving out apples and a toothbrush, lol.

Second in line was the hard-candy, black licorice, granola in a baggie (it was the 70's), etc..

Reeses, mini-candy bars, Hersheys, packs of gum, etc.. JACKPOT!

Snickers! not those little tiny ones, but the "fun size" which are about 1/2 a regular bar.

Well, it's over.

The remaining peanut butter cups are in the freezer. The Tootsie Rolls go in the candy jar on my desk at work and the Pop Rocks get handed out guerilla style during various meetings today.

Heh.

I had <20 kids this year. At least there weren't any drunk HS kids coming by at 11pm this time...

How about the people who hand out tracts (religious or otherwise)? That's just wrong, give out candy or shut off your lights and don't answer the door...

As a departure from the chocolate overdose, I always liked to see rice krispie bars, popcorn balls and caramel apples. I really shouldn't talk past tense.....

My son is allergic to peanuts and I took him around for candy. He got lots of those peanut butter cups. I wouldn't worry about it, it's the kids parents to watch out for that kind of stuff. If they are worried then they shouldn't take 'em out.

Too bad my son can't eat them, but I'll enjoy them....
