I agree that good shoes, even more importantly properly fitted shoes (your feet expand quite a bit as you run), are very important. Those old people you know probably ran on a flat surface for decades and didn't do 2 of these (up each step, down each step, move 1 set over, repeat) 3 times a week from September through May for 3 years.
