What the heck is going on with my body?
A few months ago I suffered tendonitis on my right wrist and forearm from doing straight bar barbell curls. Not heavy weight, loads I used to be able to lift without issue.
When it was warmer, I went kayaking every weekend. While my shoulders and neck got bigger, my shoulder joints ached all the time. I used to do shoulder shrugs with heavy loads without issue. Today I sprained my left wrist while awkwardly lifting a collapsible gurney (no corpse on the cart). Not a heavy table at all , just unwieldy. I'm away from home so can't get in to see my doctor but I'm pretty sure from the swelling that my wrist is sprained. Are these signs of aging? I'm only 42! What do you think of glucosamine? |
welcome to over-40. Please take a seat before you fall over...
|
Hell, I have all that and more and I'm not even 40 yet!
|
Take some tyenol you olld f(ck. I'm 52 and I'm too crochity to care about your problems. Seriously, I think weight lifting is bad news for older guys. So are high contact sports like soccer, my 48 y/o brother seriously effed up his knees doing "adult" soceer.

Guys, just wait until you're pulling 60...your brain tells you that you can do anything. Unfortunately, the body refuses to comply. Pain? It's just there...you live with it. You'll know you're really there when your MD begins every other sentence with: "At your age..."

Welcome to the party pal.
In 3yrs I went from 5'10" 190lbs (8% body-fat) to 220lbs( I don't even want to know my % is now). I can handle being a fat-ass but what really bothers me is the rapid loss of my sight. At this rate I'll be wearing binoculars by 50. |

I take ibuprofen nearly everyday. Its an excellent anti inflamatory, and as long as you don't over do it, your stomach should be fine.
I'm 37, and I have noticed that I don't recover from injury as quickly as I used to. I have a pull in my calf right now keeping me from running. I have had a ruptured disk in my back since I was 23, so I think I have a bit of a zen attitude about the whole thing. You start you day with the body you've got. Enjoy it. There is always some poor SOB who has been in a wheel chair his whole life...... |
Try ginger tablets - cured my tear inducing shoulder injury pain within a week and its never returned. Just google health benefits of ginger.
Ibuprofen is not prescribed in some countries for its gut bleeding issues. |
got '40'? i do.. ;)

I threw my back out puting on underwear sunday. Now I don't wear underwear and only sit spread eagle.

WHen you get older you have to work on strength and flexibility. Ice is your friend for all you sprains and strains.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin are more for cartilage/arthritis issues, yours sound more like tendonitis, anti-inflammatories are what you are after. I disagree about the weights. As you age, you lose lean muscle mass. Muscle burns more calories than fat, so if you lift weights and increase lean mass, you have a faster idle so to speak, burn more calories at rest. This is particularly important for women, if any are reading this. |
What are the physical changes that take place in boys?
A boy's voice gets deeper, his muscles develop and his chest gets broader. Hair starts to grow under his arms, and on his legs and face. In due course he will need to start shaving. During this time his penis and testicles will also grow bigger and longer. Hair, often called pubic hair, will also start to grow at the base of his penis. He will start to have erections and he may have wet dreams. What is an erection? An erection is when a boy's penis hardens and lengthens. Most erections are not straight, and tend to either have a curvy bend upwards or to either side. Many boys worry that their penis is smaller than other boy's, but most penises are around the same size when erect. What is a wet dream? A wet dream is when some semen (the sticky liquid that sperm is part of) comes out from a boy's penis while he is asleep. A boy may remember he had a sexual dream. Or he may just notice a wet patch on his pyjamas or on the sheets when he wakes up. It is a good idea for a boy to wash his testicles and penis, particularly behind his foreskin if he has one, after he has had a wet dream. Because a boy may develop an infection around his penis and testicles if they are not cleaned regularly, it's a good idea to wash them daily. What does it mean for a boy's voice to break? This is just a way of saying that a boy's voice will get deeper. Sometimes it can happen very quickly, perhaps even overnight. Other boys may have a time when their voice is higher at one moment and then lower even a minute later. All boys' voices will eventually settle down and sound deeper (lower pitch). How often does a boy need to shave? When a boy first has hair on his face, it is usually just a small amount on his upper lip and chin. This can be removed by shaving it off with a razor. Razors can be bought in most supermarkets and chemists. Using shaving foam or gel before a boy shaves will help reduce any irritation caused to his skin by shaving. At first a boy probably won't need to shave very often. But eventually a boy will probably need to shave every day as this hair starts to grow back quickly. |
Oops, I thought you were talking about something else.

Go see a doctor. The goal is to determine the possibility of an underlying cause for the inflamation. What's your pesticide and preservative intake?

I too have problems doing straight bar curls, even the contoured bars hurt my forearms, wrists and elbows. I try to stick with dumbells for as many exercises as possible. I think the full range of flex or turn helps you perform an exercise that works with YOUR body make up. It is less of a one size fits all approach.
On a different note, the best thing I ever did to get ride of my shoulder pain is to seperate it. Hurt like Hell for 4 months but my range of motion is now improved greatly (I'm not saying to deliberately go out and do it but...). At 41, it is difficult to get back into shape due to past injuries. The best advice I can give anyone is STAY in shape. Muscle and Flexability is your friend, fat and excess weight add to the pain. |
