Question about banning

When a user is banned, I get the idea that it simply bans that screen name. Could the system be made to ban an IP Address?

Also, is banning a long and complicated process where the moderators get together with Wayne and a jury and make a decision? Is it as easy as pushing a button? It sometimes seems like the reaction is slow- there's a troll right now, and we're all dying to see how long it lasts.

I used to moderate an RX7 board and the banning can only be done by Mods with the powers to do it. I am not sure which mod has it here.

ITs as easy as clicking a button, but, its more complicated from a trigger happy point of view. You try to give people a chence to straighten up, PMing them and seeing their attittude is usually a first step.

Reaction is slow because I think the mods here might be busy with other things and not always on top of what is going on.

Reporting a post to the moderator parks a complaint on a screen we cannot see, but the mod can. It does not bother a mod directly. I suggest you use it to point out a problem member. I used it on POT. You just do not need to report every post. Report one and tell the mod what the problem is. Then they will investigate.

I prefer the fantasy scenario I have devised. :D

I am a strong proponent to blocking a new member from being able to post up a enw thread until they have a certain post count. This way they will have to invest a certain amount of time.

The Howard Stern board limits you to 1 post an hour. You have to get to 30 posts and wait 30 days before you can start a thread. This keeps the spammers out and the trolls out as well.

BTW - As far as I know an I.P can be banned as well. I know the mods can see everyones I.P. as well its usually under their name when they post.

If the person banned is savvy enough they can trick that process as well.

I like that idea for the 'troll pond' (i.e. PPOT), but not for the tech forums...

Who is this new troll you are refering to?

If he is a right wing conservative and quotes the bible he probably won't last long. :p SmileWavy

I figure that it is possible to defeat the IP Blocking, but at least its one more hassle. Kind of like the club on a car- sure its defeatable, but if there's another forum without it, maybe they will move on.

I don't want to point out the trolls publicly, its like stroking them. I've made my suspicions known to the proper authorities. I was bad yesterday, getting sucked right in.

Depends on the board setup and the admin.

At my board http://forum.a-10.org/ the troll banning process takes a whole 5 seconds to complete, and there is no discussion required by any of the 4 guys i've given admin status too.

Another board i co-founded http://www.worldaffairsboard.com/ has a much more democratic process, and there it's a consensus thing. Takes several days to get a troll banned there sometimes.

IP bans are not really effective. Most people the the opportunity to post from multiple locations. Also, peoples home addresses change due to DHCP.

My gut feeling is that the PPOT forum should be closed to new PPBBS members until they have some time on the technical forums. Maybe after the first 50 or 100 posts, excluding posts in the classified ads. I'm not sure this type of policy can be implemented automatically, because it would never fly if Wayne or the mods had to enable users on an individual basis. My 2 centavos.

Make me a moderator. I have a fast trigger finger.

BAN.

BAN BAN BAN BAN!!

IP banning isn't realistic for a variety of reasons. It also is not taken lightly, and (sorry to dissapoint Sam) has zero to do with bible quotes or political point of view. It is rarely used, and only in extreme cases of rules violations.

I thought the good part about being a private forum is that the moderators are like god, and can do whatever they want.

Wayne, our buddy Alfred (Point-Out-Truth, T_Samner, etc.) comes back every week, under a new name, and unloads his racist bile. This has gone on for quite some time.

What if he only copies and pastes information from mainstream news sources and doesn't use any of his own words? Would that be acceptable? And, unfortunately, it's not technically feasible to ban someone who doesn't want to remain banned.

Why Pelican Parts?

What is the attraction?

We are a bunch of old guys set in our ways.

Why not prey on little kids not set in their ways?
